One dirty trick makes 'Pokémon Scarlet and Violet' way more fun - Inverse

I don’t know what I was expecting from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, but it was not a visceral feeling of panic.

Early in my Paldean journey, my future girlfriend Nemona (a charming if overly enthusiastic upperclassman) began pestering me about my “dreams.” By the time I had to leave the comfort of Naranja Academy for an independent research project, I decided to hunt down the very best Pokémon as quickly as possible. Only then would I defeat all of the gym leaders, Titan Pokémon, and Team Star goons!

Research suggested I might find the valuable Pawniard somewhere among the southwest mountains, so I set out astride my galloping Koraidon and wandered in that general direction, taking on the Bug-focused Cortondo Gym first (mainly to impress Nemona). Every sparkling item and Tera crystal formation beckoned to me as I zig-zagged further southwest. I’d find myself squinting at each small Pokémon I saw.

Okay, okay, I THINK that’s a Psyduck right there, but how can I be sure?Nintendo

“Do I already have that one…?” I’d murmur to nobody in particular before accidentally bumping into it and starting a battle. I gotta level up my wéed cat somehow, right?

I hit some coastal mountains where I battled some quirky, over-expressive trainers and wished that anybody had anything interesting to say. A perilous winding path on the southern end of a beach full of disturbing Wigletts took me hundreds of feet above the ocean. “Stunnin’!” I said aloud, avoiding the advanced-looking trainers that threatened me with their glowing enthusiasm. At the top of the sloped path, a cave loomed ahead.

“Oo!” I gasped. “A Meditite!” The zenlike Fighting/Psychic-type was one of my favorites back in the Ruby and Sapphire days, and while I was disappointed to see that they run around on their feet rather than levitate like they should, I still wanted one. I inched closer to the gaping maw of the cave entrance to pick a fight, and oh dear god an entire gang of Meditite led by one of its evolved form, a Medicham, charged at me.

I screamed.

If you see these guys, do yourself a favor and RUN!Nintendo

A Level 41 Meditite crashed into me. My starter was only Level 22. I tried and failed to run away, and the Meditite annihilated my starter (RIP) in a single hit. I threw out a random bird I had in my pocket and smashed the run button again. A miracle! I escaped the battle, but the chase was still on. Was the gang of psychic brawlers actually chasing me? Or did panic send me running around in circles? Not knowing what else to do, I leaped over them and dove into a place called Alfornada Cavern.

My jaw dropped.

Most Pokémon caves of yore are a cramped and frustrating experience. You wander through identical square rooms and fend off a gauntlet of bats and rocks with faces. Without a map, you could get stuck in the claustrophobic maze forever. For a quarter-century, I have hated Pokémon caves. Yet here was a vast cavern full of murderous dragons! A squad of Gible led by a Gabite, any of which could one day become one of my all-time favorites, the mighty Garchomp! Some creepy-looking fire lizards! That draconic Rock/Ground thing that evolves into a pseudo-Legendary designed to look like Godzilla!

I ventured deeper, wondering if a wrong turn might mean the end of me. But this was Pokémon after all. Every cave goes somewhere, even when it shouldn’t. I thanked Arceus that trainer battles are no longer forced encounters and pressed onward, sailing over anything that got in my way with Koraidon’s janky jumps. For a few short minutes, I wasn’t playing a monster-catching sim; I was playing a deeply silly and colorful platformer where I ran around on a dinosaur motorcycle.

Always stop for the selfie.Nintendo

I still have nightmares about the uncanny valley of seeing the lumbering, bipedal Toxtricity turning to look at me and hissing. (Not really, but it felt like he did. Why does every humanoid Pokémon make me feel uncomfortable?)

My breathless dash through the cave didn’t last long, and I soon emerged on the outskirts of Alfornada, a town where the Psychic gym leader was Level 43. Hitting up the local Pokémon Center, however, unlocked it as a fast-travel point. “Open World 101,” right? Every harrowing diversion is a chance at meaningful geographic progress.

I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off, even though I was having fun.

That’s probably because the greatest trick Nintendo ever pulled was getting us all to think that Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s research project is actually self-directed.

Behind the veneer of Paldea’s “open world” is a mostly railroaded experience typical of the franchise. Each gym, Titan Pokémon, and Team Star base has a fixed level range. The golden path remains linear, and the path itself is invisible unless you Google something like “pokemon scarlet gym levels.”

Nemona, I love you, but please stop lying to my face.Nintendo

As fun as it felt to get lost in a dangerous cave as I did, Scarlet and Violet feel frivolous and shallow at times precisely because of how this fractures one’s sense of immersion.

I have a lot of fun doing stupid things like leaping off the top of a mountain in a random direction just to see what happens (nothing of consequence), only to then bump right into a rare Riolu that can evolve into the coveted Lucario.

That thrill of playing Scarlet and Violet wrong makes exploration feel dangerous and surprising, which has never been the case in a Pokémon game before. It’s a big part of why despite this being the lowest-scored pair of Pokémon games in recent memory, trainers like myself can’t put it down. It just sort of hits differently. After so many stale years, Paldea is a breath of fresh air.

Yet this dirty trick is fundamentally at odds with the game’s promise of choice. You can’t go anywhere or do anything when there’s a gang of angry Meditite at twice your level eager to beat you up. A global level scaling system would deliver a more meaningful player-driven experience. The level of wild Pokémon, random trainers, and Gym Leaders should take the average of your active party and inch just a little bit higher.

He can go anywhere, and this poor chump only wants to go home.Nintendo

Scarlet and Violet’s new features often amount to half-measures like this, and all the janky goofs expose the franchise’s growing pains. Nintendo’s always reliable at delivering a colorful, engaging experience, but numerous design choices feel antiquated. I am tired of silent protagonists, and even more tired of dialogue responses that don’t mean anything at all.

Pokémon doesn’t necessarily need romance options, even if characters like Nemona make me wish that were the case. But it does need voice acting to give more life to its cartoonish characters, particularly if it’s going to promise an open world. The vast majority of humans in this world mill about with nothing interesting to say. Most of them are like one sad boy at Naranja Academy I’ll never forget who just wants to go home.

I love Pokémon Scarlet for the many weird memories it continues to deliver, but I can’t help but constantly think about the many little things I wish were different about it.

Pigtails generate more tips — and creepiness - Star Tribune

Before her double shift at a Florida pizzeria last year, Grace Velez pulled her hair, which fell past her waist, into pigtails. What she experienced that day shocked her. Regulars who usually never tipped put money in the pizzeria's tip jar. A few older men even winked at Velez, 21, as they dropped in cash.

About halfway through her shift, the University of North Florida student began to suspect that it was her pigtails that made her tips double. She typically made $45 to $75 in tips during double shifts, but she earned $140 that day.

She made a TikTok about what had happened. The post was viewed 1.4 million times, and comments streamed in from others who had similar experiences.

The reactions were mixed — even when coming from the same person. On one hand, the reaction to pigtails, especially among men, drove home the conviction that young women are fetishized. On the other hand, the servers were making more money.

When Bella Woodard saw Velez's TikTok about how "tiptails" brought in extra cash, she decided to try it.

"If this works . . . that is so weird and gross," Woodard said in a TikTok that shows her putting her hair into pigtails before her shift at a North Carolina restaurant. "But I'm down for more tips, so it doesn't matter."

The 21-year-old usually earned from $200 to $400 a night from tips. Since switching to pigtails, her tips have increased to about $400 to $500.

Velez and Woodard have been part of a viral TikTok trend showing that wearing pigtails is a moneymaker. However, the phenomenon also has sparked criticism over how women in the service industry are tipped based on their appearance.

Although the servers' pigtail stories are far from scientific, experts aren't surprised.

"It's very discomforting," said Sekou Siby, chief executive and president of the worker-led nonprofit Restaurant Opportunities Centers United. "I have my own daughter in college working in a restaurant. She switched restaurants four times because of this type of situation."

Women in service roles are sometimes encouraged by their bosses to dress provocatively, said Juan Madera, a University of Houston professor who specializes in industrial and organizational psychology.

Madera added that "the customer is always right" mentality dissuades workers from addressing sexual harassment.

"A lot of servers see it as part of the job, that . . . they're going to be harassed . . . and sexualized by customers," Madera said.

On Sunday, October 30, the Worcester Red Sox welcomed more than 3,000 fans for the second annual “Trick-Or-Treat at Polar Park.” The event was free to the public and allowed youngsters to participate in a multitude of activities. Starting at 2 p.m., trick-or-treating took place in Suites 14 through 22, where several staff members from the WooSox passed out candy and trinkets. Downstairs along the first base concourse, fans could participate in a pumpkin decorating contest, judged by WooSox staff, including mascots Smiley Ball and Woofster the WonderDog. Fans were allowed to bring in a previously-decorated pumpkin, or they could decorate on the spot using supplies provided by the club.

In addition to the decorating contest, there was also a costume contest, in which the winning fan was awarded four DCU Club tickets to a WooSox game in 2023, along with a large bag of candy. Halloween-themed music played around the park as families took pictures in front of backdrops in Sections 9 and 13.

Pixar’s "Coco" played on the left field videoboard as fans caught the movie from the seating bowl and inside the DCU Club with movie-themed snacks and adult beverages.

The event will be held again next Halloween with some potential tweaks.

“We plan on making the event a full concourse operation, with concessions available for purchase," said WooSox Ambassador Marianna Colantuono, who was instrumental in planning the event. "This is to prevent waiting in a long line for candy. We also plan to give trick-or-treaters and their families the opportunity to buy dinner next year.” The dinner option will allow families to stay for the duration of the movie instead of having to leave to eat dinner.

“The most rewarding part of planning and executing this event was seeing the multitude of smiling faces." Colantuono added. "A few fans commented on how they loved that it was a free event. I also heard various languages spoken! As Polar Park is a gathering space for the different cultures that inhabit the city, it was heart-warming to see that in action. I also loved seeing the kids recognize each other's costumes. Seeing them chat and take pictures with one another was very sweet to witness.”

The WooSox plan to do more festive events throughout the year as they continue to be a monumental part of the Worcester community.

Before the Halloween festivities, Canine Companions hosted “DogFest New England” at Polar Park, where Furry friends and families enjoyed activities, inspiring speakers, dog demonstrations, and other entertainment to benefit the nonprofit organization that ensures that guide dogs are free of charge for individuals and families who need them.

Wheeler nets hat trick, Hellebuyck and Jets blank Avs 5-0 - The Associated Press - en Español

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Blake Wheeler had three goals and an assist, Connor Hellebuyck made 40 saves and the Winnipeg Jets routed the Colorado Avalanche 5-0 on Tuesday night.

“No, it’s not just another game,” Jets coach Rick Bowness said. “I think the message we’re trying to send here is make them worry about us. They’re the defending Stanley Cup champions. They’re a great hockey team.

“We’re starting to realize that when we play the right way, and we play the way we’re supposed to play, and play together, we’re a very good hockey club. The message is more about us and the way we want to play.”

Mark Scheifele added a goal and two assists, and Josh Morrissey had a goal and an assist. Cole Perfetti contributed three assists for the Jets (14-6-1).

Hellebuyck’s third shutout of the season and 31st of his career began a four-game homestand at Canada Life Centre, where the Jets are 8-2-0.

“I thought we played a really good game. The details were right,” Hellebuyck said. “I think we improved throughout the game and we really stuck to our game and we were patient. So, I mean, a lot of the things we wanted to do, we did.”

Wheeler’s fourth career hat trick was his first since scoring four goals in a 5-2 win over Columbus on March 3, 2019.

“We’ve liked the way we’ve played,” Wheeler said. “A little sluggish in the first period coming off the road, but kind of to be expected. We just want to continue to build our game and to perform obviously at home in front of our fans. Tonight was a good step in that direction.”

Alexandar Georgiev stopped 18 shots for Colorado (12-7-1), which opened a four-game trip. It was the second time this season the Avalanche were shut out.

“We had some hard-working guys, but when you’re a short, depleted roster you can’t have any passengers and we just had too many of them tonight,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar said.

Winnipeg led 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 following the second.

Wheeler opened the scoring at 9:18 of the first, beating Georgiev stick side 20 seconds into a power play.

Scheifele appeared to score at 2:05 of the second, but Colorado challenged for goaltender interference by Wheeler and the goal was nixed.

Less than two minutes later, Morrissey fired a point shot through traffic to make it 2-0.

Wheeler scored his sixth of the season at 13:07, taking advantage of a pass from Perfetti that put Georgiev out of position.

Through two periods, Colorado was outshooting the Jets 25-14.

“We obviously didn’t get enough traffic (to the front of the net),” Avalanche forward Andrew Cogliano said. “Some pucks were laying there and we weren’t doing a good enough job getting there.”

Scheifele got his 12th after a quick pass across the front of the crease from Kyle Connor at 1:22 of the third.

Wheeler completed the hat trick with 3:51 remaining when Perfetti sent him a pass in the high slot.

JOSH ‘NORRISSEY’

Morrissey, who’s been jokingly called Josh Norrissey by teammates in reference to the Norris Trophy that goes to the NHL’s top defenseman, extended his point streak to five games (four goals, five assists). He leads the Jets with 25 points in 21 games (five goals, 20 assists) and hasn’t gone consecutive games this season without a point.

Morrissey was selected the NHL’s second star of the week after scoring consecutive overtime winners last week and posting seven points (three goals, four assists) in four games.

STREAKS STOPPED

Colorado forward Artturi Lehkonen had his career-high nine-game point streak snapped. He had four goals and seven assists during the run, which was the longest point streak on the team this season.

The Avalanche, the league’s top power-play team heading into the game, went 0 for 3 with the man advantage. That ended a run of eight straight games with a power-play goal.

UP NEXT

Colorado: Plays at Buffalo on Thursday.

Winnipeg: Hosts the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday.

Facing holiday traffic - safety tips from a police chief - WTAP

VIENNA, W.Va. (WTAP) - With the magic of the holidays comes the inevitable rise in traffic.

WTAP caught up with Vienna Police Chief Mike Pifer, who has some tips on staying safe on the roads.

The closer you get to Christmas, the worse the traffic gets - especially around the mall and business district.

Pifer encourages you to give yourself enough time to get where you’re going. Rushing contributes to road rage.

Keeping your vehicle in good condition also helps.

Pifer added that the roads aren’t the only places where you should stay alert.

“A lot of traffic too in parking lots. You wouldn’t even think of but even Walmart, Grand Central Mall - that type - there’s a lot of traffic there. We do respond to accidents in the parking lots…,” he said.

Pifer said pedestrian traffic gets worse during the holidays too. He encourages both pedestrians and cyclists to wear clothing drivers will notice.
