This 1 simple trick helped Angel City FC win their 1st game at The Banc - Angels on Parade

Angel City FC had an NWSL regular season opener for the ages on Friday, a 2-1 win over the North Carolina Courage in which the raucous home crowd at Banc of California Stadium thoroughly got the road team out of their element at kickoff, followed by two early goals for ACFC, and then a lot of holding on for dear life.

While Jun Endo had a sparkling 1st half performance in the victory, and was rightly the player of the match, with a goal and an assist as well as plenty of terrific defending to go alongside the production, there was a definite MVP of the 2nd half for Angel City FC, and maybe not for the reasons you may be thinking.

Goalkeeper DiDi Haračić did allow a goal early in the 2nd half, but from there she had a masterful performance, by doing everything she possibly could to burn clock as Angel City hung on for the victory.

The thing is, soccer doesn’t actually have many “unwritten rules” but one of the practices that is not legal and yet widespread is time-wasting. If your team is losing, time-wasting is the dirtiest trick the devil ever pulled, and if your team is winning or tied and desperately hanging on in either situation, it’s a necessary evil. Something to give your team hope as the seconds dwindle.

What struck me was how early Haračić began time-wasting in earnest. After allowing the goal by North Carolina star Debinha in the 51st minute, Haračić, the player on the field most equipped to effectively waste time, took full advantage.

After slowing playing a restart, she went down around the hour mark of the game with an apparent cramp. While it is entirely possible she had a legit cramp there, it was not especially hot in Los Angeles on Friday, and she was able to carry on with no issues (sometimes when goalkeepers pull a muscle or deal with cramp they get a teammate to take goal kicks, Haračić did not).

From there, having pulled out the biggest card right off the top, Haračić did the more mundane things to milk the clock. Goal kick? Walk around the long way for a new ball, give it a good look, place the ball down at the edge of the 6. See that spot isn’t quite perfect, replace the ball, point at a teammate, gesture wildly, point at another teammate, get a whistle from the ref to hurry up and finally kick it away. Boom, 45 seconds burned right there.

My actual favorite routines pulled by the GK was when she would scoop up to collect a ball from the run of play, fake a quick outlet pass, pump fake a couple times, walk around the box, then basically do the routine she did on goal kicks once again. She did this at least three separate times.

At one point, the referee — who to be fair called a pretty good game, especially by the “Wild West” standards of the NWSL — walked back upfield to issue a warning to Haračić. Remarkably, she wasn’t shown a yellow card at this point, which admittedly was probably warranted. Instead, Haraćič again tested her luck on this exact stretch of play before finally kicking off. I swear, with the ref’s help she managed to bleed close to 1:30 off the clock.

The effort was contagious around Angel City, who truly were hanging on in the final minutes. Twice midfielder Cari Roccaro suffered fouls, and stayed down on the field a beat or seven longer than usual. The first time, I thought she was hurt, but as she got back to her feet and began jogging again, she had a wry grin on her face.

Meanwhile, forward Tyler Lussi did get hurt, first taking a shot off the head before going to the other end of the field and getting inadvertently smacked in the face or eye by a Courage player. But while we all hope she’ll be just fine, she was taking one for the team as she needed medical attention and eventually, a substitute that also helped take time off the clock.

Obviously, if I was North Carolina, I’d be furious that Haračić’s tactics were not reined in far earlier. But, you know, this is an Angel City site, and the veteran did what she had to to get the result. That’s some queen shit right there.

Even ACFC head coach Freya Coombe acknowledged the time-wasting efforts of her goalkeeper.

“DiDi has proven herself in these big moments to overcome triumphs,” Coombe said postgame. “She understood the assignment in terms of managing the momentum of the game. She did a fantastic job for us and contributed to our win in a massive way.”

Can’t say fairer than that. Usually we judge GKs on saves made or not, goals allowed and distribution, but in this particular game, the occasion called for the ‘keeper to just burn that clock away, and she was built for the moment. Congrats to Haračić for her 2nd half MVP performance, Angel City probably would not have sealed the win without it.

Alex Kane Loves Cheap Trick: Alex Kane has played with everyone from Enuff Z’Nuff, Shark Island, Marky Ramone, Richie Ramone, and his own AntiProduct (and we’re only scratching the surface). He spoke to us about one of his favorite subjects — Cheap Trick.

Music is my life so anything that moves me, that that teenage rock n roll heart that never dies unless you kill it yourself feels, is my favorite album.  Whats in that league?  New bands like Palaye Royale, Starcrawler set me alight and let me know rock n rolls new generation gets it and it is in really good, strong, driven, smart ambitious hands, but thats not the question.

I can tell you, though, the band and album that changed the entire direction of my existence and other than the statute of limitations running out, these dudes made me ruin my life so I should have sued em.  haha.  The first Cheap Trick record, hands down.

It was/is my voice. In it I found a kindred spirit  rebels with squirty flowers. Nothing sounded like that album before it. It was the best of The Who, The Beatles, the Sex Pistols, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Zepp, you name it, all rolled into one. They sang pop songs bout serial killers and were as heavy and twisted as anyone before them but in a less literal and knuckle draggy way. You knew from the very intro of “Hot Love,” this band didn’t give one single fuck and was gonna do it their way, you could join em or get the fuck outta they way. And the more I learn about music after being pro for almost 40 years now, the more I’m blown away by it.

The arrangements literally have not (not probs ever will be) surpassed. The chord voices that made 6 guitar strings and (mostly) 4 to 8 bass strings sound like every piano being dropped down an echoey stairwell in its gigantic and monstrous way is true, tried and tested, sweat it out in the clubs for years playing to 5 people on a Tuesday in some shit hole in the wall garbage venue genius. I remember seeing the ads in Circus magazine, the four characters in the band being spread out and described over four pages, seeing Rick for the first time, in the black and white ad, and thinking, THIS guy is now my all time rock n roll hero and I just know theres something pivotal for my entire generation in this bands collective brain. All my stage moves were learned playing air guitar to this thing hours on end in my early teens in my bedroom.

Once I started playing for real, I just needed to learn the actual real world chords and add them to the moves. As serendipity would decree, I was doing a jam in Hollywood on the night Cheap Trick found out they were being inducted into the RnR HoF.  I was playing some songs with Robin Zander (the greatest American rock n roll singer who’s not in Aerosmith). In my Chicago born and bred mind and need to bond (or at least be tolerated by him) I said to Zander “If you guys don’t get inducted, that place is neither rock n roll nor a hall of fame.” He liked that. I say to you, dear reader, if you don’t have this record and all but memorize it, you don’t know rock & roll it at all or how it keeps your teenage rock n roll heart beating.

Spin the Black Circle: I want you to want to listen to Cheap Trick - Yakima Herald-Republic

As someone who moved to Yakima in September, my first event at the Yakima Valley SunDome should have been obvious.

Let’s see … a Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame band, from my home state, whose first five albums I own and still love listening to. Seeing Cheap Trick at the Central Washington State Fair on Sept. 30 was a no-brainer.

Unless that was the night I had to leave town so my wife and I could pack up our belongings for the U-Haul and close out of our old house before moving that weekend to Yakima.

Instead of seeing Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson and Robin Zander live and in color, my first visit to the SunDome was several months later for an agriculture equipment show. Yet another near miss with a band I could have/should have seen multiple times. I surrender. …

With luck, many readers of this column were able to enjoy Cheap Trick’s Yakima show last fall. For those of us who didn’t, there’s always “Cheap Trick at Budokan,” one of rock’s greatest live records.

But because I own that one on cassette, I will choose the middle of the Rockford, Ill., band’s great opening trio of albums, “In Color,” to review here.

This record sets the tone for Cheap Trick’s great career in every way, from the music to the cover art, with their band name listed in its iconic Courier-style font.

Let’s start with the cover of the record: Petersson and Zander, in their sultry rock-stud glory, straddle motorcycles (in color) while guitar nerd Nielsen and rumpled accountant-turned-drummer Bun E. Carlos are displayed on little kids’ dirt bikes on the back (in black and white). The latter image is upside down from the cover, meaning you have to flip the LP’s gatefold sleeve to read the song titles and credits — and to see Nielsen’s and Carlos’s sneakers and loafers, soaked after walking their bikes through a puddle.

The boys would repeat this joke on their also-stellar third album, “Heaven Tonight,” with the glamorous boys out front and the other two staring into a bathroom mirror on the back.

Now for the music. Because their early albums were not bestsellers, many people were first exposed to Cheap Trick via their fourth album, “Cheap Trick at Budokan.” Half of the songs on that live album made their debut on “In Color”: “Hello There,” “Come On Come On,” “Big Eyes,” “Clock Strikes Ten” … and Cheap Trick’s biggest hit, “I Want You to Want Me.”

The version of that hit on “In Color” sounds much different — with a jangly piano break, a more staccato beat, less heavy guitar and no Japanese girls chanting during the chorus. Which version is better? I’ve heard arguments for both, but to these ears the original sure sounds fresh after hearing the hit live version thousands of times on classic rock radio.

Three of the album’s best songs were not included on “Budokan” (at least not on the original 1979 version; an extended CD of that live album came out in the 1990s), and they’re all on side two. “Oh Caroline” and “Southern Girls” are great rockers that feature every member of the band at their peak: Zander’s powerful lead vocals, Nielsen’s power chords, and the thump and groove of Petersson and Carlos on bass and drums. The rhythm section particularly shines on “Southern Girls,” which Petersson co-wrote with Nielsen, who penned most of “In Color” by himself.

Then there’s the closing song, “So Good to See You.” I’m a sucker for album closers that dial it down a notch and send you off with a touch of light sweetness. You know, like a piece of lemon meringue pie after 35 minutes of meat and potatoes. Zander’s crooning melody carries the day, but the lean guitar parts and beat stay with you after the vinyl stops spinning.

Cheap Trick has enjoyed a long, successful career, and as they showed the Central Washington State Fair crowds last year, they can still deliver their hard rock and humor after 40-plus years of performing.

But the first three albums were their ticket out of north-central Illinois, bridging the gap between metal and rock, between Rockford and Los Angeles, between Midwestern dive bars and stadiums. Whether you enjoy rock in color or in black and white, Cheap Trick’s second album stands the test of time and is fun to revisit again and again.

GM Ultium Energy Recovery Heating System for EVs - Car and Driver

• Ultium energy recovery captures heat generated as an electric vehicle moves—from the motor or the battery or even from the people in the car—and uses it as a heat source elsewhere.
• General Motors developed the system to improve efficiency—and it does, by up to 10 percent, according to the company.
• GM claims the setup even contributes to the GMC Hummer EV's hair-raising acceleration performance.

Eking out every last bit of energy from an electric vehicle's battery pack is an important engineering task. General Motors’s latest trick to make the most of a battery-electric vehicle's energy comes courtesy of a new kind of heat pump that recovers excess heat energy—from the battery, the powertrain, or even the people in the car—and uses it to warm the cabin and extend the vehicle’s driving range.

GM calls this new technology Ultium energy recovery, and as its name suggests, the tech applies to the company's line of Ultium-based battery-electric vehicles. This list currently includes the GMC Hummer EV, with the Chevrolet Silverado EV and Cadillac Lyriq due soon. Other Ultium vehicles are in the works, too, including the Cadillac Celestiq sedan, and GM notes the Ultium energy recovery system will come standard on every one of its current and future Ultium-based EVs.

GMC

The heat sources the Ultium energy recovery system draws from include the battery itself, various power electronics, some propulsion components, and—most interestingly—the body heat of the people within the cabin, as well as humidity in and outside of the vehicle. The Ultium energy recovery system then uses this captured heat to warm the cabin. GM estimates this heating solution can extend the range of an EV by as much as 10 percent.

Additionally, GM claims the Ultium energy recovery system can warm the cabin of its EVs in less time than “comparable systems” of vehicles with internal combustion engines. The setup also offers potential performance enhancements. For instance, Ultium energy recovery helps cool the Hummer EV's propulsion system when the vehicle's placed in its Watts to Freedom mode. As such, the big pickup's powertrain can be pushed harder without overheating, thus netting the Hummer EV a 60-mph acceleration time of around three seconds.
