Beniers' Hat Trick Leads Michigan Past Arizona State - University of Michigan Athletics - MGoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Matty Beniers notched his first career hat trick to lead the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's ice hockey team to a  4-1 win over Arizona State on Friday night (Feb. 26) at Yost Ice Arena. Erik Portillo backstopped the Wolverines to earn his fourth victory of his freshman campaign.

Sophomore forward Eric Ciccolini opened the scoring with a squeaker of a goal at 16:42 of the first period. Michigan's leading scorer, Thomas Bordeleau, and defenseman Nick Blankenburg recorded the assists on Ciccolini's sixth of the season.

Beniers doubled the U-M lead several minutes later, potting a goal from the netfront area into a wide-open net following a beautiful feed to the slot from Owen Power to take a 2-0 lead with 1:41 left in the opening period. Luke Morgan picked up the secondary assist on the goal.

The Sun Devils took a hooking penalty with 32 seconds left in the opening frame. Brendan Brisson ripped a series of dangerous one-timers from the right dot but failed to find the back of the net before the end of the period.

After 20 minutes, shots were 15-2 in Michigan;'s favor and it ascended the locker room stairs with a two-goal lead.

After its first power play elapsed in the early going of the second period, Michigan received its second man-advantage opportunity of the evening following an ASU penalty for interference at 3:10. The Wolverines threatened for the second time in as many tries but failed to convert.

Later, it was Beniers scoring his second goal with 5:44 left in the middle stanza to give U-M a 3-0 lead. Kent Johnson made a beautiful cross-crease pass to set his classmate up for the goal, while Cam York collected the secondary helper on the tally.

With two periods in the books, U-M held a 3-1 lead while outshooting ASU, 26-12.

Beniers secured his and Michigan's first hat trick of the season with a gorgeous shot off the iron at 5:22 of the final frame. The hat trick was the first for the Wolverines since Feb. 7, 2020, when Nick Granowicz scored three against Wisconsin. Morgan (second of the game) and blueliner Jack Summers assisted on Beniers' ninth goal of the season to extend U-M's lead to 4-1.

Portillo finished the game with 19 saves as the Wolverines put the finishing touches on their victory over the Sun Devils. The win marks Michigan's sixth in as many tries over ASU.

On Saturday night (Feb. 27), the Wolverines and Sun Devils will face off at Yost Ice Arena in Michigan's last home game of the season. The game is set for a 7 p.m. puck drop and will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus. At the conclusion of the game, U-M will honor its four-member senior class -- forwards Jack Becker, Luke Morgan, Michael Pastujov and Dakota Raabe.
