(WBNG) -- During the winter months some people find it especially challenging to get outside for activities, but one popular leisure activity to try is ice fishing!
But when fishing on the ice, it is always important to be smart and prepared. Ice fishing is a safe winter sport but it is important to be ready in case of an accident.
Here are some helpful safety tips and tricks while dropping fishing lines through the ice.
There are different types of safety gear that you should have ready when planning a day out on the ice.
The first set of gear needed is precautionary. This could be equipment such as a spud bar that can be used to test the thickness of the ice. The purpose of a spud bar is to see if you can break through the ice with it. If you can, then the ice is too thin. If you cannot break through, the ice is typically safe. It is key to continue to test the ice as you walk out onto it as ice thickness can be inconsistent.
Other gear you will want to have before heading out is a long rope that can be used to pull someone out if they were to fall into the water.
Another piece of equipment is a set of spikes or anything else that can be used to grip the ice if you need to pull yourself out. Don't forget though to make sure the spikes are on your person at all times.
Local ice fishing enthusiast, Jay Vassil recommends that if you do fall through the ice, remember not to panic. The most important thing to do is kick your feet. This will help your body to become more horizontal, allowing you to pull yourself out a little bit easier.
Vassil goes on to say that he wants everyone to know ice fishing is actually a very safe sport! As long as people respect the ice and know its limits, then it can be fun for all.
