Hate flossing? Here’s how to trick yourself into doing it every day - SFGate

I used to disappoint my dentists. Twice a year, they'd ask me if I’ve been flossing regularly, and my answer was basically always “no.” Sure, I’d get home after the appointment and floss like mad for a few days (before inevitably falling out of the habit), and sure, sometimes I’d try to make up for six months of neglect with one last panicked assault on my gums the morning of my next cleaning, but I wasn’t fooling anyone. It was turning into a real problem, so when a friend told me that a startup direct-to-consumer (DTC) floss company called Cocofloss had finally gotten her to stick with the habit, I knew I had to give it a try.

To be honest, my first reaction was to balk at the price tag, since a six month supply costs $25. Sending that much money on floss all at once was a bitter pill for me to swallow – even though, if you do the math, you'll realize that’s less than $.14 per day. But I knew I had to do something, because I was starting to understand just how important flossing really is.

Though less popular than brushing your teeth, flossing is nevertheless an important part of your daily routine. The US Surgeon General, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and the American Dental Association (ADA) all consider flossing essential, and some dentists even consider flossing more important than brushing. By skipping this step, I was seriously neglecting my oral health, but I just couldn't change habits on my own. I needed an incentive to help me change course.

And wouldn’t you know it, it was that initial cash outlay that finally transformed flossing from a passing dalliance to one of my nightly rituals. My inherent stinginess wasn’t going to let me spend $25 on dental floss and then let it go to waste. In this case, that stubbornness was harnessed for the good of my oral health.

Once my floss arrived, I was surprised by how substantial it felt. While I’d used thread-thin floss before, as well as several brands that were flat and plasticky, Cocofloss was noticeably thicker. That’s because it’s made from over 500 interwoven filaments, creating a durable strand that seemingly never shreds. It is also full of microscopic nooks and crannies, creating an abrasive surface that will grab, and then trap, plaque and bacteria. Compare that to a smooth, extruded plastic floss, which might shake loose big chunks of food wedged between your teeth, but is too slippery to actually scrub them clean.

The upshot here is that Cocofloss felt a little weird – uncomfortable, even – to use at first, though it did compress somewhat to fit between my more closely spaced teeth. You get used to it, however: after just a few nights, I was actually looking forward to flossing.

It doesn’t hurt that Cocofloss smells and tastes great thanks to an infusion of natural coconut oils that are available in several flavors. I went with “Delicious Mint”, which evoked the aromas of actual mint leaves (rather than fake mint extract), but you can also try strawberry, coconut, or orange flavors, and if you can’t decide you can even order a variety pack (just $12 for an eight week supply). Finally, the whole strand is finely coated in a thin layer of wax for added comfort – which isn’t necessarily unusual, but I am pretty sure it’s the only floss that has never made my gums bleed. Another cool aspect of Cocofloss is its transparent case, which features stamped, circular guides on the outside to help you gauge how much longer your floss will last, so you’ll never find yourself never caught off guard and flossless on a business trip or vacation.

A few weeks ago, it was clear that my six month supply had nearly run out (after seven months, to its credit), and as I neared the end of my third and final spool, I figured that my flossing habit had been firmly established. I wouldn’t need Cocofloss anymore! I now had the mental discipline (I told myself) to floss nightly with the countless packs of free floss that I’d brought home over the years in dentist goodie bags! I was appreciative to Cocofloss for what it did for my oral health, but I just couldn’t bring myself to hit the Buy button again; not for $25.

That is, until I tried a lesser floss, and felt it shred into ribbons as I worked it between my incisors, get stuck between my molars, and slice up my tender gums. After just two nights of using the cheap floss, I gave in and ordered another six month supply of Cocofloss.

I admit it: I’m spoiled, and now there’s no going back. I still say that $25 every six months is a bit expensive for floss, but if you factor in my motivation and how it’ll help me avoid dental work down the line, I'm actually saving money… not to mention my teeth.
