Bryan Rust led the march of the Penguins on Saturday as they beat the first place New York Islanders, 6-3, at PPG Paints Arena.
Rust scored his first two goals in the second period but almost lost an opportunity at his third in the final period after being sent to the penalty box. However, he would clinch the hat trick after a successful shorthanded kill allowed him to score on an empty net. The trio of Sidney Crosby, Frederick Gaudreau and Evan Rodrigues also netted a goal each.
After the game, Rust commented on that final goal saying that the penalty kill defense helped set it up.
After the game, Head Coach Mike Sullivan highlighted the Pens’ success on Power Play opportunities.
The Penguins have now won 6 of their last 8 matchups against New York, and Sullivan said that the reason for their success against top rivals is due to multiple factors.
Both teams will square off again on Monday night with puck drop set for 7 p.m.
