Allessie's Hat Trick Spurs 5-0 Win over Indiana – Ohio State Buckeyes - ohiostatebuckeyes.com

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Aided by a hat trick from Mackenzie Allessie, the Ohio State field hockey team shutout Indiana on Friday afternoon, 5-0, at Buckeye Varsity Field in Columbus. The Buckeyes and Hoosiers square off again on Sunday, April 4, at noon.

Allessie’s hat trick continues a stretch of stellar play for the sophomore. She now has six goals in the last three games following a three-goal weekend at Northwestern last Friday-Sunday. Allessie, who added an assist for a four-point day, was joined the scoring column Friday by Sammy Stone, who scored off an Emma Goldean pass in the third quarter, and Katie Pyle, who found the back of the cage in the 25th minute to give Ohio State a 2-0 second-quarter lead.

“Great win today at home,” said head coach Jarred Martin. “Nice to put in some goals, but I am also happy that we were able to get the shutout against an Indiana team that has a quick counter attack. We have had some tough losses that have stung; however, we have been playing good hockey and have improved each weekend. I am just proud of the team for staying focused and believing in the work they have put in at practice, in video, and with their fitness.”

The stat sheet was also all Buckeyes on Friday: Ohio State outshot Indiana 23-0 and held a 9-0 edge in penalty corners. Perhaps most impressively, nearly 60 percent of their shots were on goal: 13 of 23 (.565).

After a scoreless first quarter in which Ohio State outshot the Hoosiers 7-0, Ohio State broke through at less than three minutes into the second quarter as Allessie took an entry pass from Delaney Lawler, settled and lifted a shot over the goalkeeper from in close.

Seven minutes later, Pyle made the score 2-0 for Ohio State with her first tally of the season, a shot that was redirected into an open net off a cross by Allessie from the right endline.

The Buckeyes put the game away in the third quarter with a three-goal run, starting with Stone’s goal that came off a cross from the left side that was tipped in from right in front of the goal. Allessie’s second goal of the day was a penalty stroke at the 34:15 mark of the game and she finished her hat trick nine minutes later off a feed from Stone.

The five goals for Ohio State not only were a season-high, it was also their highest goal total in a Big Ten game since Sept. 29, 2019 when it defeated Indiana 6-2.

“I liked how our passing game looked and how we were able to generate attack in a variety of ways,” Martin said. “I still think there is more in this team and we will keep working to grow. This conference has shown how competitive the Big Ten is top to bottom so we need to make sure we are at our best starting on Sunday with a rematch with IU.”

Six different players registered a shot of goal, led by four from Allessie and Stone and two by Nikki Trzaska.

 Statistically Speaking
Shots: Ohio State 23, Indiana 0
Penalty Corners: Ohio State 9, Indiana 0
Saves: Indiana (McNally) 8, Ohio State (Danson) 0
Leading Scorers (G-A): Mackenzie Allessie 3-1; Sammy Stone 1-1; Katie Pyle 1-0; Emma Goldean 0-1; Delaney Lawler 0-1
