Carmelo Anthony's trick to make sure he has good wine while on the road originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest
NBA players have increasingly become wine connoisseurs in recent years, and they have gone to great lengths to procure wines that they enjoy while on the road.
Just ask Portland Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum about it. He turned his room into a wine cellar during the NBA bubble.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Blazers forward Carmelo Anthony has a similar but slightly more convenient system to make sure he can enjoy a bottle that he likes on the road.
"I carry my own wine," Anthony said in a recent interview with Wine Spectator, "I always have a bottle in the bag, especially for an overnight trip."
Hey, that's one way to make sure that you can get what you like, especially while the NBA's health and safety protocols largely prohibit players from leaving their hotel while on the road.
Speaking of road trips, what's Anthony's plan if he's on a longer one? Bring more wine!
If I'm on the road for a week, eight or nine days, then I'm packing at least a six-pack. I just grab six bottles out of the cellar, it doesn't matter. I just want to drink something good.
Carmelo Anthony
It's entertaining to imagine Anthony boarding the Blazers' team plane with a six-pack of wine. But at the same time, he's the league's unofficial wine ambassador. He always has to keep the best wines with him; it comes with the territory.
Either way, it seems that Anthony has figured out a good way to make sure he always has a wine that he likes handy. It's worth wondering how many other NBA players are following his lead on this front.
