BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 19 USC women's soccer team got a hat trick from Croix Bethune and recorded its fifth straight shutout on Sunday afternoon, beating Cal 5-0 in a Pac-12 matchup.
The Trojans matched their season high with five goals in the game, scoring three times in the first half and twice in the second to move to 7-3-2 overall and 6-3-1 in conference action. Cal falls to 5-6-1, 3-6-1.
Bethune got things going early, putting one in the back of the net just 5:16 into the game for her first collegiate goal. She followed that up with a second strike almost exactly six minutes later, giving use a 2-0 lead in the 12th minute.
Penelope Hocking then found the back of the net in the 13th minute, getting the feed from Tara McKeown and Bethune to score her ninth goal of the year. McKeown assisted all three first half goals.
Bethune then completed the hat trick in the 61st minute, getting a feed from Jen Westendorf to make it 4-0 USC. After the Bears got called for passing the ball back to their keeper, USC was awarded an indirect kick in the penalty area, and Hocking tapped it to Lily Perryman, who buried it through a wall of Cal defenders. It was the first career goal for the midfielder Perryman.
Both teams recorded 12 shots in the game, but USC put nine on target to just four for the Bears. Kaylie Collins made three saved before giving way to Anna Smith late in the second half.
