Deion Sanders hints at trick play vs. Southern - 247Sports

Deion Sanders has won three of his first games as a collegiate head coach and entering Saturday's rivalry showdown vs. Southern, the leader for Jackson State University football may have a trick up his sleeve to win another one. Coach Prime teased this week that it's time to incorporate a red-zone play into his team's arsenal at some point this season, retweeting a recent Weber State hook-and-lateral that was successful inside the 10.

Jackson State hosts Southern on Saturday on ESPN, Sanders' first nationally-televised game since becoming head coach.

“That’s changing the game. And not just for Jackson State,” Sanders said last month when his team's television debut this season was announced. “Every time we play on television and people want to see us, what does that do? That allows other teams, opposing coaches, everyone to be seen and heard. And get the notoriety that we all desire.”

SWAC commissioner Charles McClelland said earlier this year he is doing what he can to ensure his conference gets more exposure nationally, beginning with coverage on ESPN.

“We understand our value and we understand our worth. We’re going to start to demand that our value and our worth be respected and entities understand that,” he said. “I think we are a big enough conference with enough name-brands now to start setting some of our own terms… We don’t have to necessarily acquiesce to some of the terms that have been laid out for us in previous times."

Saturday's game is Jackson State's only non-conference game of the season. Sanders said his team isn't looking at the matchup from a conference vs. non-conference perspective.

"The history of Southern-JSU have been big enormous games, which is pretty much like a classic, (if) you would say," Sanders said, via The Clarion-Ledger last week. "We don't care about the conference and the nonconference. We want to win the game, and we want to perform well."

Sanders has already had a chance to celebrate one rivalry win this season when the Tigers took down Grambling State in March. After the win, Sanders opined on the impact he wishes to have on HBCU football.

“Even before I got here, when the accusations of me coming — the love has been there,” Sanders said. “Brothers like this wonderful gentleman [points to left] and so many others in this city have embraced me, have opened their arms to me and have blessed my kids as well.

"I’m excited every time I step foot outside the door to see someone, an alumni or JSU fan or even a JSU — not a hater, but someone who is riding with another HBCU. They’re still excited about the potential of what we bring to the table and just the enormity of opening doors for HBCU football. I’m truly excited.”
