Spoilers for Captain Marvel #28 ahead!
Loki is Marvel’s premiere trickster, capable of conniving and scheming his way in and out of just about any situation, but now Marvel has revealed the one person Loki will never trick: The Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange!
Despite his villainous status, at least in the first few decades of his existence, Loki may be one of the most important characters in the Marvel Universe as he was the catalyst for the founding of the Avengers. Originally depicted as a classic supervillain, over the years Loki’s depiction has shifted to be more in line with a classic trickster archetype, one more mischievous than outright evil. That is not to say Loki has still not done bad stuff . Among many other things, he did trick Doctor Strange into giving up the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme for a while. That was probably the nail in the coffin for Strange, as Captain Marvel #28 reveals he has taken great lengths to prevent Loki from trying such a trick again.
Throughout the issue, written by Kelly Thompson with art by Jacopo Camagni and colors by Espen Grundetjern, Captain Marvel is looking for a teacher to instruct her in the ways of magic. She is seeking magical powers to help prevent the dystopian future she was stuck in for the past few issues from coming to pass. She first goes to Doctor Strange, who sees the folly in her request immediately, but humors her by letting her experience magic for a day. He then takes her to the Bar with no Name, and on the way in, he tells Captain Marvel the bar is open to everyone… except Loki. Doctor Strange has implemented a no-Loki policy at the Bar and has even outfitted the establishment with an enchanted lock designed specifically to keep Loki out, as he caused the last Bar with no Name to disappear.
Loki has made life miserable for a number of Marvel heroes over the years, and no doubt many of them desire something, or some way, to keep the trickster at bay - Captain Marvel even says so herself, wishing she could Loki-proof her apartment. If anyone in the Marvel Universe is in a position to create anti-Loki measures, it's Doctor Strange. Not only does Strange’s magic give him the abilities to do this, but he also probably still holds a grudge against Loki for tricking him out of the title of Sorcerer Supreme.
While Loki may have softened up a bit over the last decade, there are still plenty of heroes that want nothing to do with him and are willing to go the extra step to ensure he does not come around; Doctor Strange is one of them. Captain Marvel #28 is on sale now in print and digital.
