Last minute virtual career fair tips | Career Services - CU Boulder Today

A young woman looks at her watch and sits in front of a laptopLooking for a summer internship or job? The virtual Just in Time Career & Internship Fair is this week and there’s still time to register for sessions with employers. Here are some tips to help you prepare for the fair on Wednesday.

Update your Handshake profile

Take time before the fair to update your Handshake profile and resume to highlight your skills, abilities and experience. Students with completed Handshake profiles have a better chance of meeting one-on-one with employers at virtual careers fairs. Review these steps for setting up your Handshake profile. Once you have that updated, make sure your profile details, particularly your qualifications, resume and GPA, are on the public setting for employers to see.

Schedule time to chat virtually with employers at the fair

Review the list of employers on Handshake that will be attending the fair and make a list of who you’d like to speak with during the day. Sessions are being added continually to accommodate more students and help you learn more about specific job opportunities and company culture.

There are two types of sessions that are offered: group and individual.

Group sessions are more general, last for 30 minutes and have 10-15 students in them. These types of sessions are more informal and can be a great way to get started learning more about the company, available positions and how to apply.

Individual sessions are more like an in-person experience, where you have a one-on-one interaction with the employer. You’ll have a chance to share your resume and introduce yourself, your studies and your career ambitions.

As you create your schedule, build in some down-time between sessions. Having a short 15-minute break between sessions gives you time to jot down notes from your recent conversation. These notes can help you recall details when you write a thank you note or follow up on next steps for applying to the job. The short break can also help you mentally shift gears and refresh on details specific to the next company you’re meeting with.

Plan for the day of the fair

Coordinate with your housemates to let them know about your virtual fair schedule and that you’ll be interacting with potential employers. Ask that they be considerate and avoid noise and interruptions. You could put a sign on your door as a helpful reminder for those passing by not to knock should they forget your schedule for the day.

Think about what you’ll wear and set up your space. Dressing up can put you in a better mindset for the virtual fair and help you make a good first impression if you’re on camera. Additionally, be mindful of your background if you have a video chat scheduled with an employer. Have a notebook and pen nearby, and a glass of water on your desk. Sometimes you may need a moment to think about a question the employer has asked, and taking a quick sip of water can give you time to organize your thoughts.

The day of the virtual fair, keep your normal morning routine. If you don’t normally eat breakfast, this day might not be the day to start. Keeping your normal habits will make sure that you know what to expect with your energy levels. And be mindful of how much caffeine or coffee you have to avoid feeling jittery later.
