Netanyahu pulls the last rabbit out of his hat, but the trick falls flat - Haaretz

Like an aging magician whose audience is dying out, Benjamin Netanyahu pulled the last trick left to him out of his hat on Monday – a bill to directly elect the prime minister. This isn’t even a new trick. It was tried in the 1990s, failed and was erased from the law books.

And it’s not even Netanyahu who pulled it out. He was helped by his long-time sorcerer’s apprentice, Arye Dery. Anywhere a deceptive maneuver is concocted and an anti-democratic plot is born, you can find the traces of Dery’s crocodile tears. This is the same Dery who served as Kahol Lavan chairman Benny Gantz’s “security” during the previous act of this drama.
