The annual ritual of preparing for hurricane season is upon us in Miami-Dade County, and the Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) would like to offer you some tips on preparing your lawn ahead of any possible storm.
• Now — before a storm threatens Miami-Dade County — is the ideal time to prune your trees and bushes and remove tree limbs. You’ll be working without the pressure of a storm bearing down.
• Schedule a bulky waste pickup for those lawn clippings and tree trimmings. If you are a DSWM customer, you are entitled to two bulky waste pickups a year. Now is a good time to use one of those pickups, rather than waiting for the rush before a storm.
• Don’t want to use a bulky waste pickup? Miami-Dade has 13 Neighborhood Trash and Recycling Centers (TRCs) throughout the county and if you are a customer, you can use any location as often as you need. You can drop off tree trimmings, that old lawn furniture you have been wanting to get rid of, small amounts of construction debris from a DIY project (up to three cubic yards), old appliances, and even up to four automobile tires. Visit the TRC webpage for locations and hours.
• Check your lawn for possible mosquito breeding sites and get rid of those items as well (if possible). Old appliances, hollowed-out tree trunks, buckets, cans, barrels and old tires can all hold water and breed mosquitoes. Given that tropical storms and hurricanes can bring lots of rain, the last thing you want while you are recovering from a hurricane is a mosquito problem a week later.
