I love office supplies, but for some reason I consider having to buy padded envelopes a personal failure. Anytime I receive something in a padded mailer, I do my best to extract it without damaging the envelope. This means opening it at the end, even if it’s one of those kraft-paper envelopes with the handy pull-tab on the side. Then I add the empty envelope to a stack that lives in my office-supplies closet. (See? I really do love them.) When I need to mail something, I fish out the right-size envelope, insert the thing I’m sending, fold over the top of the envelope, and staple it shut (one staple every inch or so). Next, I stretch a piece of Scotch tape over the staples (front and back), to keep them from scratching anyone handling the package. Then I obliterate any old addresses or barcodes on the mailer with a fat Sharpie. Last step: I write the address I’m sending the mailer to on a clean piece of scrap paper, along with my return address, and tape that paper to the front of the mailer. If I’m feeling really ambitious, I’ll cover the whole piece of paper with clear packing tape, to protect it.
