Today we are going to have a little fun and take a look at all 13 of BYU’s trick plays from the 2020 season. When you have an offense that was as high scoring as the Cougars had last year, you don’t need to run many trick plays to move the ball. However, almost every game Grimes threw in a little wrinkle to keep the defense honest. These kinds of plays were such a staple in the offense last year, that it's almost irresponsible to call them trick plays. They are almost just plays.
One thing that really stood out to me was that BYU had a strong tendency to run their trick plays into the boundary (11 out of 13 plays). They also had a tendency to wait to get tricky until they passed the 50 yard line. The only two plays not past the 50 were at the 49 & 47 (Close enough). Trick plays can be dangerous, especially when you are exchanging the ball multiple times between 3 or 4 players. So it makes a lot of sense to wait until the offense passes the 50 because even if something goes horribly wrong and turns the ball over, then the defense isn’t left with a short field. With all that being said, let’s take a look at all of these trick plays!
