Oregon State mailbag: Addison Gumbs health, NIL deals, revealing trick plays - OregonLive

You ask, and we answer questions about Oregon State athletics. This week’s installment:

Any NIL deals for OSU football players? – @BellevueBeav

I’m told there are a few small ones, but none that stick out. I’ve talked to several players and they either say, 1) name, image and likeness not a big priority heading into a season, or 2) heard from a few people, but nothing serious yet. FYI, it’s clear the biggest NIL deals this school year won’t go to an Oregon State football player, but incoming gymnast Jade Carey, the Olympic gold medal winner in floor exercise.

What is the most likely time a starting QB is named? – Patrick J

Time? That I do not know. Date? I suspect unless it’s obvious during camp, the starting candidate will be told Aug. 27, the day after camp breaks. It’ll then become public probably a day or two later.

How is Addison Gumbs’ health? Is he back to 100% for Fall camp? – Jeff C.

My impression is that Gumbs is as close to 100 percent as he’s going to be. Coach Jonathan Smith says they’ll be “smart” with Gumbs’ practice work early in camp. It’s pure speculation as to whether he’ll play in OSU’s opener and beyond. The Beavers are hopeful, and if he’s able, Gumbs should give the defense a significant boost.

Every year it seems like there is a surprising name missing when the fall roster is released, will there be one again this year? – Neil D.

Unless we’re hit with a Friday surprise, no. All the incoming freshmen/JC transfers, save for a mission candidate, are on campus. The only significant player out for a chunk of camp is tight end Teagan Quitoriano (foot).

I am curious (worried) to see info about:

1. is anybody emerging at running back?

2. is there improvement on the Def Line? -- @scorobe1

On paper, it’s a two-man battle at running back between Deshaun Fenwick and B.J. Baylor. Fenwick is more of a bruiser, while Baylor is a slasher. But the gap isn’t so pronounced that a new face couldn’t jump into the mix. Jermar Jefferson wasn’t talked about prior to 2018 camp, and he ended becoming a three-year star.

As for defensive line, there’s some reason to believe it’s improved. Minnesota transfer Keonte Schad brings some experience and beef. Thomas Sio moves from offensive to defensive line, and at 347 pounds, is another big body. Tavis Shippen, Alexander Skelton and Jeromy Reichner are up more than 10 pounds from spring. The Beavers will be better up front. They don’t have to be great (though that’s the goal). They need to hold up and allow the linebackers and safeties to make plays.

Tristan Gebbia 100%? – Brandyn J

Smith said no. But he’s close enough to move around, throw and as Smith says, score touchdowns. The good news is, Gebbia knows the offense. They’ll probably limit what Gebbia does with his legs early in camp.

Don’t they have some secret trick plays they’ll want to practice? – Robert W

This was in reference to Oregon State camp practices, all that are open to the media. There are some stipulations to which the media agree in order to watch practice. One is to refrain from revealing formations or trick plays on social media or stories. It’s a reasonable request.
