Heat illness is a danger in conditions with excessive heat and humidity and the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission has tips to feel cooler and conserve energy.

The PUC recommends using fans to circulate air, relax in rooms that do not get direct sunlight, use window blinds to block the sun, postpone using heat appliances like dishwashers and clothes dryers, and use outdoor grills or microwaves instead of stoves or ovens.

Residents can save money by closing off unused rooms and adjusting air vents and thermostats to cool more efficiently.

A free heat safety app developed by OSHA and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is available to plan outdoor work activities based on how hot it feels throughout the day.
