ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Kevin Buca scored a hat trick to lift the University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Northwestern on Sunday (Sept. 26) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The win came in a match that was the first-ever Power Five contest featuring two Black head coaches, Michigan's Chaka Daley and Northwestern's Russell Payne.
Buca had the first hat trick of his career and the first for the Michigan program since Francis Atuahene netted three goals against West Virginia on Sept. 4, 2015. Evan Rasmussen, Ryan Schultz, and Marc Ybarra each had assists on Buca's goals. Goalkeeper Hayden Evans made three saves in his third win of the season.
Michigan (4-4-1, 1-1-0 Big Ten) outshot Northwestern 11-10 with six shots on net.
Michigan wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Rasmussen crossed the ball into the box and Buca headed it down and in from two yards out in the second minute. The Wolverines did not let up as Derick Broche and Rasmussen each tested the keeper over the first 24 minutes of the match.
Buca scored his second goal when Schultz sent the ball up the field. Buca chased it down and made a quick move past the keeper and shot it into a wide-open net from six yards out to extend Michigan's lead to 2-0 in the 26th minute.
The Wildcats looked to cut their deficit to one, but Evans came up with an impressive diving save with 10 minutes to go in the half to keep Northwestern (2-5-2, 0-3-0 Big Ten) scoreless.
The Wolverines went into the locker room with a 2-0 lead, outshooting Northwestern 6-2 with five shots on goal.
Buca completed the hat trick in the second half when he took a shot pass from Ybarra and blasted it in the lower-left corner from 24 yards out to extend the U-M lead to 3-0 in the 53rdd minute.
Northwestern spoiled the U-M shutout in the 82nd minute, placing a shot in the upper-right corner of the net out of Evans' reach. The Wolverines hunkered down on defense and did not let up another goal to earn the victory.
Michigan travels to Bloomington, Ind., for a 5 p.m. match against Indiana on Friday (Oct. 1), a contest that will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
