Douglas posts third career hat trick in 's 4-2 win over CSUN - Arizona State University Athletics - Sun Devil Athletics

TEMPE – Nicole Douglas tied a single-game school record with three goals as the Sun Devil soccer team improved to 5-0 following a 4-2 win over CSUN on Thursday's day one of the Sun Devil Classic.

Douglas, who moved into third place on ASU's all-time list for career goals (33), scored in the 24th minute (penalty kick) and again in the 32nd minute (unassisted) to help the Sun Devils bounce back from an early 1-0 hole.

The Sun Devils, who had more than double the number of shots (22-8) and twice as many shots on goal (12-6) and corner kicks (8-4), took a two-goal advantage into the locker room after Dai Williams found freshman Kennedy Mayo, who put away the first goal of her career to give ASU a 3-1 lead.

"I'm delighted with the result and happy to get another victory," ASU head coach Graham Winkworth said. "I'm a little disappointed and what's most encouraging is the players are disappointed with their level of performance today. A sign of a good team is to get results when playing poorly. I don't think we were poor, but we weren't at our best and so I think we've got to reflect on that in the next couple days and come back and put in a stronger effort against a very talented LSU team on Sunday. Overall, I'm happy to get a positive result but just a little disappointed with the performance today."

Douglas, who also moved into a tie for third place for career points (80) – made it three career hat tricks after finishing off a delivery from Jazmine Wilkinson to extend ASU's lead to 4-1 in the 52nd minute of play.

True freshman goalkeeper Birta Gudlaugs played all 90 minutes for the third-straight game after splitting time in the first two games. Gudlaugs (goalkeeper of the week) and Lieske Carleer (defender of the week) both earned Pac-12 honors earlier this week for their performances in last week's wins at Mississippi State and at UAB.

Up next for the Sun Devils is a Top 25 showdown on Sunday (2 pm MST) when they host No. 17 LSU at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. In Thursday's second game of the Sun Devil Classic, the Tigers (5-0) defeated Arizona 2-0 to remain unbeaten. Sunday's doubleheader will start off with a contest between Arizona and CSUN at 11 am.
