Hitting irons v. woods || Golf tips with Mark Andersen - eParisExtra.com

It is not unusual for some gofers to prefer their irons over their woods. And vice versa. This preference can oftentimes be explained by players’ swing characteristics. Some swing characteristics make it easier to hit irons, and some make it easier to hit woods.

That aside, the mechanics of golf swing itself should not really change when you hit irons or woods. But that doesn’t mean nothing changes. First, woods are longer than irons so instinctively you will be standing further away from the ball with them. The other big change is where in the arc you strike the ball.

For iron shots, we position the ball in the center of the feet because we want to strike the ball when the club is at its lowest part of its arc (which should be in the center of the feet). For woods, we move the ball up in the stance. This allows us to catch the ball as the clubhead is starting to swing up slightly. And therefore, reducing spin and increasing the chance of getting a good, high flight on the ball.
