Tips for bear-proofing your Michigan campsite this fall - MLive.com

LANSING, MICH. -- With plenty of great camping weather still in store this year, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is sharing tips on how to avoid encouraging black bears into campsites.

According to the DNR, campers should consider adding a few items to their packing list to make sure their campsite doesn’t inadvertently attract bears or other curious wildlife.

Those items include:

Airtight containers and storage bags: Food and toiletries should not be kept in tents. Store food and toiletries in airtight containers in a vehicle trunk, or suspend food from trees in burlap or plastic bags or backpacks.

Rope: Hang containers or storage bags 12 feet above ground, 10 feet from the tree trunk and 5 feet from the nearest branch.

Cleaning supplies: Wipe away any food debris or spills on utensils, camp chairs and tables.

Trash bags: Store trash as you would food. Burning or burying waste attracts bears.

There’s been an increase in bear activity this year at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in particular, where black bears have been raiding improperly stored coolers and trash at the park’s Union Bay campground.

Bears and other wildlife may wander through your campsite, the DNR said, but if food is prepared and stored properly and utensils and spills are cleaned, they should continue through.

Never intentionally feed a bear or other wildlife. For more tips on preventing encounters with wildlife while camping, visit Michigan.gov/Wildlife.
