When does trick-or-treating start for Halloween 2021? What time is trick-or-treating? When does trick-or-treating end?
Parents often wonder when the best time for trick-or-treating is on Halloween, and homeowners wonder when they should be ready to start handing out candy. According to Good Housekeeping, trick-or-treating usually begins across the U.S. around sunset, between 5:30 and 6 p.m.; in Syracuse, sunset on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021 will be at 5:57 p.m.
Many communities don’t have strict start and end times for trick-or-treating. Most houses hand out candy until they run out of sugary and chocolatey treats, but Parade magazine says polls show younger kids usually stop by 8 p.m. (or earlier) and older kids sometimes stay out until 9.
Some places, however, like the city of Syracuse, strongly suggest specific times for starting and stopping trick-or-treating. The Neighborhood Watch Groups of Syracuse and the Syracuse Police Department recommend residents hand out candy on Halloween between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
“We are not telling residents their lights must stay on until 8:00 P.M. but we are recommending no lights stay on past that time. This recommendation is voluntary and will go a long way in reducing crime while helping the Syracuse Police Department,” the neighborhood watch group said.
The Syracuse Police Department said it would also have extra patrols on Halloween to ensure neighborhoods are safe. If residents see any suspicious activities or individuals, they are instructed to call 911.
WIVB reports the city of Buffalo similarly recommends cutting off trick-or-treating at 8 p.m. WTEN says most of the Capitol Region doesn’t have designated trick-or-treat hours, but Schenectady suggests 2-8 p.m.
Some places also offer early trick-or-treat or trunk-or-treat events when the Oct. 31 holiday falls on a school night, like this year. A few 2021 events in Central New York include:
- OCC drive-thru trick-or-treating - Sunday, Oct. 31 from 1-2:30 p.m. at Onondaga Community College (4585 West Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse). “Dress up and mask up” as you drive along the campus for the free vent.
- Trick-or-treating at Destiny USA - Sunday, Oct. 31 from 2-6 p.m. Families can walk around the Syracuse mall and collect treats from participating stores, restaurants and attractions.
- Trunk or treat at Clay Panthers field - Saturday, Oct. 30 from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
- Trunk or treat at 2000 Teall Ave., Syracuse - Saturday, Oct. 30 from 12-6 p.m. in parking lot
Most communities do not have Covid-19 restrictions for trick-or-treating like last year, but concerns may still be elevated. The CDC says outdoor activities are safe and both kids and parents should wear a well-fitting mask, not just a Halloween costume mask. In areas with high Covid transmission rates, people should also wear masks inside even if fully vaccinated.
The Associated Press says it’s also considered generally safe for children to ring doorbells and collect candy since the novel coronavirus mainly spreads through respiratory droplets, not surfaces. But it’s still a good idea to use hand sanitizer or wash your hands before eating treats.
Adults handing out candy should also wear a mask when they open doors, or can be extra cautious by setting up candy bowls away from front doors.
