Hat Trick Lifts SCSU Past Women's Hockey - RPI Athletics

TROY, N.Y.  – Senior Jenniia Nylund netted a hat trick to lead the St. Cloud State University women's hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Huskies sweep the weekend series and improve to 6-7-1, while the Engineers drop to 5-12-0.

The visitors got the scoring started at 5:19 of the first period, when junior Addi Scribner (Woodbury, MN) picked out the top left corner of the net for her third goal of the year. Classmate Allie Cornelius (St. Cloud, MN) and sophomore Nicole Ness (Apple Valley, MN) earned the assists on the play.

Five minutes into the second, Nylund doubled the Huskies' advantage after stealing the puck in the right corner of the offensive zone. Walking to the middle of the slot, she lifted the puck over RPI junior netminder Amanda Ramado (Stoney Creek, ON / Stoney Creek Sabres) and just under the crossbar for the unassisted tally.

Junior Marah Wagner (Langley, BC / Robert Morris) then ignited an RPI comeback effort at 11:22 of the middle frame. Receiving a cross-ice pass from sophomore Riena Jahnke (Allen, TX / Dallas Stars), she rifled a one-timer past St. Cloud State sophomore goaltender Sanni Ahola (Helsinki, Finland) for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. A secondary helper was credited to sophomore Maddy Papineau (Sudbury, ON / Oakville Hornets).

RPI pulled even just over a minutes later on a point shot by sophomore blueliner Taylor Larsen (Bolton, ON / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs). Assists on Larsen's third goal of the season went to senior Lilli Friis-Hansen (Lyngby, Denmark / Gentofte) and junior Julia Blitz (Potomac, MD / Washington Pride).

Nylund gave St. Cloud State the lead for good at 8:59 of the third period after sophomore Emma Gentry (Alpena, MI) was held trying driving the net from the right circle. The puck popped free to Nylund, who ripped a shot past Ramado for her second of the game.

With Rampado lifted for an extra skater, Nylund completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal at 19:27, capping the scoring in the contest.

Ahola (4-6-0) finished with 26 saves, while Rampado (4-12-0) had 30 stops at the other end of the ice. RPI wound up 0 for 4 on the power play, with the Huskies going 0 for 3.

The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they resume ECAC Hockey play at Dartmouth and Harvard. St. Cloud State hosts Bemidji State for two next Friday and Saturday.
