BIG RAPIDS – Ferris State men’s basketball coach Andy Bronkema and his players enjoyed playing at Big Rapids High School so much on Thursday and they’re going to do it again on Saturday.
The nationally-ranked Ferris State University men's basketball squad rolled to a high-scoring 120-77 win over Purdue Northwest in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener on Thursday night at Big Rapids High School.
The Bulldogs bolted out to a big lead and scored 60 points in each half en route to the triumph, improving to 6-1 overall.
The games on Thursday and Saturday are being played at BRHS with the NCAA volleyball regionals taking place at Wink Arena.
“We’re thankful for Big Rapids,” Bronkema said. “It’s a beautiful floor with bright lights. The guys like these lights. The people came out. It was an atmosphere. We felt that and we used that.
“We’re giving up our gym, but for the greatest reason. There’s a lot going on. I’m thankful we’re pulling it off. It’s been stressful. We pulled it off and we feel good to do it with a win.”
The Bulldogs dished out 38 assists on 48 baskets and had six players reach double-figure scoring while shooting 61 percent from the floor and knocking down 14-of-31 (45.2 percent) three's.
Ferris was led by senior forward Dorian Aluyi with a game-high 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and senior guard Walt Kelser, who added 20 points and nine assists.
“We played very hard and very well,” Bronkema said. “It’s kind of like the third game this year when the shots went in. It energizes us. It energizes anybody. That’s how basketball works. When you see it go through the hoop, you have extra burst. It went in a lot early and that helped us. The guys played their role.”
Ferris State will host Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday back at BRHS in GLIAC play with tipoff set for 4:30 p.m.
