Tips to keep your fresh Christmas tree alive this season - eParisExtra.com

File / eExtra News

According to the National Christmas Tree Association, between 25 million and 30 million live Christmas trees are sold annually in the United States. And, while most people don’t really think of the Lone Star State providing a good home for Christmas trees due to our climate, that’s not entirely the case.

“Christmas trees typically grow in colder climates with mild summers and cool or cold nights,” said Fred Raley, Ph.D., tree improvement coordinator at the Texas A&M Forest Service’s Forest Science Laboratory, College Station. “But because of our hot, dry summers and warm nights, the Texas climate can only provide a suitable environment to support a limited number of Christmas tree types.”

About 35 different species of trees are grown more specifically for Christmas, with most consumers choosing theirs based on availability, size, shape, needles, branches, fullness and aroma. Balsam, Douglas, Noble and Fraser firs, Scotch pine and Colorado blue spruce are among the most well-known Christmas tree varieties.

“Christmas tree varieties grown in Texas rival many of the better-known trees from other states and provide an equally attractive alternative,” Raley said.

The following are tips from the Texas Christmas Tree Growers Association to keep a tree fresh throughout the season:

  • Real trees need water, just like a fresh bouquet of flowers.
  • When you bring the tree home, make a fresh cut one-quarter inch or more above the original cut until you reach fresh wood. This removes the sap seal, allowing your tree to absorb water.
  • Immediately place the tree in a water-holding tree stand. Trees are very thirsty, so make sure to keep them watered. A Christmas tree may drink one gallon or more of fresh water per day for the first few days, then decrease its intake.
  • Check the water supply daily and replenish as needed.
  • If storing your Christmas tree outside before decorating, remember to keep it in water and protect it from wind and sun.
  • In the house, place the tree away from fireplaces and other heat sources.
  • Carefully check all electric lights and connections before decorating the tree and home. Do not use lights with worn or frayed cords and never use lighted candles.
  • Be sure to turn off all decorations before retiring at night and at any time you leave your home.
