UTEP football scored arguably the best touchdown of the season with a play designed to confuse just about everyone on the field and at home.
UTEP was a 13-point underdog to Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl. So what did they really have to lose?
They played like it, pushing the Bulldogs to the end with a spectacular trick play in the fourth quarter helping them keep things close.
On the score sheet, quarterback Calvin Brownholtz throwing to tight end Trent Thompson for a touchdown wouldn’t raise too many eyebrows. It was all about how it went down.

The formation threatened a QB sneak but it may just as well have been a victory formation with a quarterback and 10 blockers in formation. It was the bunch of all bunches.
Brownholtz paused for a second to open up space for Thompson while everyone seemed to think a sneak was coming. It was all perfectly timed.
The touchdown pulled UTEP within two points of Fresno State but it wasn’t enough to pull them ahead. The Miners fell short after the Bulldogs kicked a field goal and got a safety to close out the 31-24 victory.
UTEP led 17-9 in the second quarter before Frenso State rallied with a touchdown and field goal in the final two minutes of the half. Jordan Mims scored his third touchdown of the outing in the third quarter as the Bulldogs took the lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
