7 Tips to Declutter Your Life - The New York Times

Life is messy. We all eventually accumulate clutter.  But you don’t have to surrender to disorganization. Below, our experts offer tips that will make reorganizing your life quick and easy.

Rearrange your fridge

Wirecutter senior editor Marguerite Preston laid out a step-by-step plan on how to organize your fridge, including a focus on the importance of food safety. One of her best tips is to use a lazy Susan for condiments. Instead of having to go elbows-deep digging through rows of bottles, just spin the lazy Susan around to find that curry ketchup you’re seeking. Our top pick OXO Good Grips Turntable is durable, lightweight, and easy to clean. Next, use painter’s tape, like green FrogTape, to label and date everything so you can eat items before they go bad and reduce food waste. Finally, to keep the space organized going forward, use a whiteboard to note what’s in your fridge and where it’s stored.

Simplify your desk

With at-home work becoming even more prevalent, it’s essential to keep a clutter-free workspace. The devices you use the most should stay on your desk, and the rest can be kept out of sight. But be sure they’re in a categorized area so they’re easy to find. For unruly cords, Wirecutter’s Melanie Pinola suggested tucking them away with the JOTO Cable Management Sleeve. You can also keep your cords in place while you work with the Twelve South Surface Snap.

Tame your purse

Even relatively small purses can quickly become bottomless pits. Since there are so many things to carry, it doesn’t take long for favorite brushes, keychains, and makeup accessories to get lost in the abyss. Start by emptying the entire bag and removing everything you don’t need. To make finding essentials a little easier, consider keeping pouches in your bag—just be sure to label them using different categories, like makeup, brushes, jewelry, or pencils. If you want something even simpler, you can grab one of our recommended purse organizers, with built-in pockets and pouches.

Invest in a closet system

A closet system is a great way to arrange your space. The wall-mounted devices typically come with simple and sleek builds that make storing clothes and accessories easy. You can also employ hangers and hooks to keep shoes and purses off the floor. And storage containers are great for keeping extra bedding, pillows, and other personal items.

Sort your digital files

If you’ve been struggling to find your photos, calendar events, or even legal documents, it may be time to rethink how you’re organizing your digital files. Melanie suggests creating keywords and tags for all of your folders and files—such as “personal documents,” “in progress,” and “complete.”  You can also separate your photos in folders labeled with the appropriate year and month. To make locating your digital essentials effortless, pin your frequently used folders so they’ll always be up top.

Categorize your children’s playroom

Messy playrooms are practically inevitable—this is what fun looks like. To save yourself the stress of cleaning up after intense playtime sessions, plan ahead. Wirecutter deputy editor Annemarie Conte suggests categorizing your toys in storage bins and setting up zones for different activities. You can also place messy toys, like puzzles, out of reach. And be sure to donate toys your kids don’t use (do this when they’re asleep). That way you can conserve your sanity and give your kids more space to play.

Upgrade your Christmas-decor storage

If you haven’t gotten the chance to take down your holiday decorations, we have some tips to make cleanup and storage easier for next year. Store your tree in a rolling duffel bag, a tree cover, or storage bins. Wrap up lights by hand and secure them with a rubber band. Clean other decorations, like outdoor inflatables, with a damp cloth before storing them in labeled containers. Finally, you should take notes on where and how you stored everything, to make your setup a lot easier next year.
