Fromm-Delorme hat trick breaks it open, Winterhawks win 6-2 - OregonLive

Robbie Fromm-Delorme breaks the game open with a 3rd-period hat trick, and the Portland Winterhawks beat the Tri-City Americans 6-2 Friday night at the Toyota Center in Kennewick, Washington.

The upset was on as the Ams led 2-1 late in the 2nd period, but Portland scored the last five goals of the game--Aidan Litke tied it in the last minute of the 2nd, then Fromm-Delorme led the four-goal outburst in the 3rd.

Dante Giannuzzi stopped 42 of 44 shots.

Why the Winterhawks won: Robbie Fromm-Delorme coming up big in the 3rd. He’d been stopped on two breakaways earlier in the game, but converted two goals around the net to break a 2-2 tie, then hit an empty net late to convert the hat trick. He’s scored 4 points in the 2 games back after missing 16 with injury. He was on a good scoring streak when he got hurt--he’s scored 15 points in his last 12 games.

Why the Winterhawks won: A big game from Dante Giannuzzi. The Ams hadn’t been within 10 shots of Portland in any of their previous eight games, but had already hit their season high in shots against Portland by the end of the 2nd. Giannuzzi had to do a lot more work than expected, and he was equal to the challenge.

Why the Winterhawks won: Their penalty kill remains in the top spot in the league. They went 3-for-3. The big ones were the kill of a Tyson Kozak double-minor early in the 3rd with the score tied 2-2. A goal against, in addition to making them chase the game, would have knocked them off the top ranking.

Why the Americans lost: They still give up way too many shots. They are now alone in both most goals given up in the league and most given up per game. They defended better than they have in some games, but the math won out.

What it means: Seattle beat Spokane, so the Winterhawks didn’t extend their lead, which is 4 points on Seattle for 3rd in the conference, ahead of the big game Saturday night.

What it means: Victoria’s win in Vancouver tied them with the Americans for the last playoff spot in the West. Tri-City has their own big game with Spokane on Saturday, two points that both teams need as they challenge for 8th.

27:10 TC Marc Lajoie (Connor Bouchard, Rhett Melnyk) 0-1 Dante Giannuzzi stops Bouchard’s stuff attempt, but the weak side rebound goes to Lajoie who finishes nicely.
28:06 POR (pp) James Stefan (Tyson Kozak, Jaydon Dureau) 1-1 A beautiful backhand pass by Kozak from the top of the paint to Stefan wide open on the back door.
28:58 TC Samuel Huo (Lukas Dragicevic, Ethan Ernst) 1-2 Huo given too much room down the slot on the rush and he banks one off the post.
39:07 POR Aidan Litke (Marcus Nguyen, Kyle Chyzowski) 2-2 Another nice setup on a 2 on 1 from Nguyen to Litke; Nguyen gets Lukas Dragicevic to slide down, then backhands the pass by him to Litke.
45:41 POR Robbie Fromm-Delorme (Cross Hanas, Kurtis Smythe) 3-2 From the goal line Hanas was looking to load up for a circus shot, but bobbles the puck and instead throws it toward the net, where Fromm-Delorme tips it in for his first.
48:29 POR Robbie Fromm-Delorme (Cross Hanas, Tyson Kozak) 4-2 Hanas throws a long pass that Fromm-Delorme was just trying to beat the icing on, it takes a big rebound off the end boards to the goal line. Fromm-Delorme as an afterthought one-times the rebound on the backhand from the goal line, and it sneaks through Nick Avakyan’s short side. Not a goal a WHL goalie should give up.
48:50 POR Gabe Klassen (James Stefan, Jaydon Dureau) 5-2 Klassen from the left dot beats Avakyan shortside.
58:06 POR (en) Robbie Fromm-Delorme (Cross Hanas, Jack O’Brien) 6-2 Fromm-Delorme hits the empty net from the blue line to complete the all-in-one-period hat trick.
