As a winter storm rolls through the Midwest it’s a good idea to stay off the roads, but if one has to go out and brave the weather, there are a few tips to keep in mind.
Every winter, there are more than 2,000 road deaths and half a million crashes throughout snow-laden parts of the country, according to the American Automobile Association. With such high numbers, it is important to remember with snowy weather comes needed changes in driving habits.
AAA recommends staying home, but there are instances when one must venture out. In such cases, AAA offers some advice.
• Drive slowly: A simple way to avoid a crash is to decrease vehicle speed, including when starting and stopping the vehicle. This takes into account areas with lower traction such as icy intersections.
"Don’t try to get moving in a hurry and take time to slow down for a stoplight," AAA’s website states.
• Increase following distance: In addition to taking it slow, AAA recommends allowing for five to six seconds of distance between yourself and the vehicle ahead of you. This allows for a longer stopping time in areas with less traction.
• Know your brakes and don’t stop if you can avoid it: Make sure before hitting the road that your braking system is in good shape. Many times, it is better to apply steady pressure to your brakes and slow down when approaching a red light. If you can make it to the light when it turns green and keep going, it is much easier than trying to get your vehicle moving from a dead stop when there is little traction.
• Lastly, let others know when and where you are driving: When you do have to head out onto the roads, let someone know when you’re leaving and when you should be arriving. Take into account the weather and how that might affect your travel time.
