'Magician' Uses Trick To Steal Thousands From Walmart Cashiers: Police - Newsweek

A "magician" has used a trick to steal thousands of dollars from Walmart cashiers in Texas, according to police.

Police in Seguin, a city of around 30,000 people near San Antonio, said the "magician" used a sleight of hand quick-change trick to take a total of $2,700 from Walmart employees on two occasions—January 10 and February 12.

In a March 14 Facebook post, the Seguin Police Department (SPD) said: "Penn and Teller - watch out. Seguin has their very own magician on the rise."

The SPD added: "Quick changing is when a suspect uses a sleight of hand trick while counting out their change to pocket money.

"The suspect will count out the change showing the employee that he was short-changed while he uses his other hand to pocket a portion of the money.

"Both a magician & a fashionista—this individual changed for his performance and is pictured during both incidents."

Anyone with information has been asked to contact Detective Schramm on 830-379-2123.

The SPD jokingly said police hoped officers would receive a helpful tip about the "magician" so they "can book him for his next magic performance."

Newsweek has contacted the SPD for further comment.

According to Texas government crime statistics, there were 461,421 cases of larceny-theft in the Lone Star State in 2020.

This represented a drop of seven percent from 2019 when there were 496,279 incidents of larceny-theft.

In 2020, the Texas index crime rate was 2,666.7 crimes per 100,000 people, which represented a 4 percent drop from 2019.

Newsweek has reported on numerous cases where crimes have allegedly been committed in Walmart stores.

Last year, two women in Arizona allegedly stole $100,000 worth of items from Walmart stores.

Mary Garcia, 47, and Melinda Rodriguez, 38, were charged with several counts of organized theft following their arrest on June 17.

Earlier this year, a brave woman stopped an alleged shoplifter who was about to leave a Walmart store in Canada by tearing off his balaclava.

In a video uploaded onto Facebook in January, a man in a balaclava pushed a shopping cart packed with goods towards the exit.

But as the alleged shoplifter was about to leave the Walmart, an elderly woman appeared suspicious of his behavior. She then blocked his way out and ripped off his mask.

When his face was revealed, the man left the shopping cart, exited the supermarket and rode away on a bicycle.

Darrell Johansen, who shared the clip on Facebook, said he informed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police about the incident. He added other cases of stealing had occurred at the Campbell River Walmart.

Johansen posted: "There's nothing preventing private citizens from jumping in but it's probably not recommended given the unfortunate incident that happened at our Walmart here a few months ago with that security guard getting stabbed. But I've just had it with this ****."
