This trick-performing guinea pig is making a play for a Guinness World Record - CBC.ca

Gwen Ford says her beloved pet Coco isn't like most guinea pigs.

"Coco was always a little more high strung than the other guinea pigs that I've rescued, and I could tell that he was kind of bored with just being a guinea pig," the High Point, N.C., woman told As It Happens guest host Gillian Findlay.

"He was always very inquisitive and, you know, always wanting to get out, you know, meet people and explore the house. I mean, he's always getting into stuff."

She finally found an outlet for the rambunctious critter when she came across a Facebook video of Canadian Jenna Symons, who has trained her guinea pigs to perform tricks.

"So I said, 'Well, let's just see if he can do one. And he did one," Ford said.

Watch: Coco the guinea pig performs some of his tricks:

That first trick, she says, was a simple right spin. Since then, Coco has mastered 70 different tricks, including jumping over Ford's arm, pushing a soccer ball, jumping through a hoop and ringing a bell.

And just last week, Ford says Coco performed 18 tricks in one minute — setting a new world record.

"He's just a smart guinea pig," she said.

So far, Coco's world record title is unofficial, but Guinness World Records spokesperson Amanda Marcus confirmed the company has received Ford's application, and will review her evidence, a process that usually takes 12 to 15 weeks.

Guinness doesn't have an existing record for most tricks performed by a guinea pig in one minute, so if Coco's feat is approved, it'll be the first.

If he makes the cut, he'll join other record-holding guinea pigs, such as Flash, the world's fastest guinea pig; Priscilla, the guinea pig with the most Instagram followers, and Fizz, who performed the highest platform jump by a guinea pig.

But whatever happens, Ford says she's proud of her pet's perseverance. She says she first met him four years ago while volunteering at an animal shelter, where he was suffering from a fungal infection.

At the time, she says he was aggressive and prone to biting, possibly because he was in pain. So she got him treated, requested to foster him, and taught him to be the friendly creature he is today.

"He is definitely a one of a kind," she said.
