There’s not a much better scene in an NBA arena than when the Grizzlies get up late in a game and they blast the Memphis classic “Whoop That Trick” over the FedEx Forum speakers – especially when they have Al Kapone himself rap it in Steph Curry’s face. Houston has way more hip hop classics than Memphis, and it’s time we adopt one as the arena anthem that tells visiting teams it’s time to kick rocks.
Picking just one is a nearly impossible task.
Geto Boys’ “Mind Playing Trick On Me” may be the most well-known rap song to ever come out of Houston, but there’s no real hook that fans can chant, unless we want to all stand and yell the super-familiar beat, “Dah dahdahdah dahdahdah dahdah, Dah dahdahdah dahdahdah dahdah,” which, you know, isn’t a half-bad idea, but doesn’t quite have the “Whoop That Trick” energy.
Fat Pat’s “Tops Drop” and Lil Flip’s “The Way We Ball” are Houston classics, but the hooks are just a little sing-songy for an arena anthem.
In “Wanna Be a Baller,” Lil Troy made one of the most perfect Houston songs of all-time, but that hook “Wanna be a baller, shot-caller, 20-inch blades on the Impala” is probably too long to chant, and once we get started, it’s going to be impossible to stop and before you know it, we’re all yelling about getting “sprayed by Ike” and our “20-inch crawlers.”
Lil Flip’s “Game Over” has the perfect sentiment – we shut it down, now get your narrow behinds out of our city – but the hook really is just Flip saying his name over and over, so that’s not going to work.
Lil Keke gave us perhaps the most chantable hook with “Southside” – “Southside, the southside … yeah … The southside, the southside … yeah.” As someone who’s never lived farther north than Bissonnet and firmly believes that Southside Still Holdin – shout out to ESG – this would be my choice, but out of respect for our Northsiders, we’ll stand down on that.
Really, the best single line that sums up the whole vibe we’re looking for comes from a Jay-Z song when Pimp C outrapped the “Big Pimpin” originator, by bellowing, “Uhhhhh … now what y’all know about them Texas boys.”
There are other options: "Sittin Sidewayz" and "Draped Up" and their familiar hooks both could work, but maybe the best choice would be a Houston standby: "Still Tippin." It spreads the love between Slim Thug, Paul Wall and Mike Jones, and although “Still tippin’ on four fours, wrapped in four Vogues” isn’t said with the same "Whoop that Trick" energy, there would be no more Houston moment than a crowd yelling it over and over again in unison as visitors take an L and leave our city.
