You maintain your car's engine, your home, and even your body, but when it comes to your appearance, you're just fine with getting by on a trim every few weeks, forgoing any at-home maintenance. While regular trims are important for keeping up your hair shape and style, there's so much more that a well-groomed man can do to keep his face and beard in perfect condition.
Celebrity groomer Kim Verbeck is the woman responsible for keeping some of Hollywood's best-groomed men in fine form. Her list of clients reads like a Who's Who of Hollywood's leading men, from Alexander Skarsgård, Ryan Gosling, and (of course) Top Gun: Maverick star Jon Hamm.
Verbeck has mastered the art of making these men look polished and put-together for high profile events and photoshoots, and it's a look that's just as practical to wear out in the real world. With a little effort, a few products, and regular upkeep, you, too, can achieve a red-carpet-ready appearance in your every day life.
"Keep it simple—it’s all in the routine," Verbeck says of her grooming philosophy. "Regular haircuts, skincare routines, brows and beard [maintenance] is the key.

Avoid Harsh Lines
"When trimming your beard, know what lines will suit your face best," says Verbeck. "I prefer natural edging to harsh lines. I see too many men bringing the beard line up too high on their jawline!" She uses the Philips Norelco OneBlade Hybrid Electric Trimmer and Shaver to get that superstar-like super-close shave. It comes with three attachments to trim, edge, and shave your beard.

Have Trimmer, Will Travel
A well-groomed man takes no time off his grooming routine. If you want to keep your beard shape maintained while traveling, pack a trimmer in your luggage. "The Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer BT3210/41 is cordless, easy to clean, and has 10 different length settings," says Verbeck. "It’s nice and compact, and easy for traveling."

Keep A Comb At Home
Verbeck says a beard comb is an essential tool for a well-groomed appearance, especially for trimming over the lip area. "Give it a good comb down before trimming for even length," she says. "Always give your beard a comb when you're done grooming." She recommends using a deeply hydrating beard oil for a luxurious grooming experience. "Apply oil very liberally," she says. As an added bonus,"the smell is lovely."
Don't Skimp on the Shave Gel
Verbeck is a fan of using razors to clean up around the beard line, but only in tandem with a moisturizing shave gel. Otherwise, you may end up with razor burn that's red, itchy, and painful. "If using a razor for clean-ups, Baxter Beard Line-up Shave Gel is nice. It's non-foaming and very soothing for skin," she says.
Use a Matte Moisturizer
Moisturizing the skin underneath your beard is key if you want the hairs to grow in healthy and thick. Verbeck opts for a matte formula for all her leading men.
"Don’t forget to moisturize the skin," she says. "La Mer Moisturizing Matte Lotion is my go-to. It’s so hydrating but does not make the skin shiny. No shiny skin!"

Camouflage Spots
Camouflage acne marks and dark spots with a single dot of concealer—and we mean just a dot! Any more will make your cover-up job too noticeable. Tap it in with your finger to blend it in and pick up any excess product that may be sitting on the surface of the skin. "The Jillian Dempsey spot stick concealer is a quick, easy way to cover little imperfections or darkness under eyes," says Verbeck.

Don't Forget About Your Nose/Ear Hair
As you age, you may start to notice a few more hairs cropping up in and around your nose and ears, thanks to changes in hormones. If you want to shave a few years off your face, you'll need a nose and ear trimmer to get the job done right. This wet-dry battery-powered shaver removes those pesky hairs effectively and efficiently for a clean, sophisticated look.

Never Leave Home Without Lip Balm
"Don't forget lip balm!" Verbeck cautions. Winter wind or summer sun are a recipe for chapped lips, which can be uncomfortable. Keep a lip balm in your pocket, in your car, and at the office to keep your lips moisturized and protected.
Take Pride in Your Grooming Routine
Finally, Verbeck urges men to make the time and effort to maintain a solid grooming routine. When you look good, you feel good, and that sense of inner self-worth can change how you show up in the world."When a man’s look is pulled together, it gives them the confidence to go from being on-camera to [at] an intimate dinner party—and everything in between," she says.
