6 hot Oregon wine tips for July - OregonLive

From Kiss to the opera, the month of July is brimming with new wine releases and events to help you celebrate summer. Just don’t get caught watching the paint dry with these recommendations, as these wines and tickets will disappear quickly.

Sundays at Pete’s Mountain Vineyard & Winery

Mike and Kris Thayer have carved out a wine oasis atop Pete’s Mountain, and the view alone is worth a visit. I suggest sitting in their outdoor tasting area and whiling away a lazy Sunday afternoon with their fantastic 2021 Pete’s Mountain Sisters Rosé ($26) in your glass. The wine is packed with peach, chamomile and Strawberry Starburst fruit chew flavors, all backed by ample acidity.

Now Tommy Thayer, Mike’s brother, is joining the family business. The lead guitarist for Kiss recently released his 2021 Pete’s Mountain Vineyard “Tommy’s Reserve” Sauvignon Blanc ($28). With its aromas and flavors of lime zest, lemon gelato, grapefruit, lemon verbena and a trace of ginger, this is a heck of a way to savor summer. There are only 250 cases available, so you had best climb Pete’s Mountain ASAP.

Noon-5:30 p.m., Sunday only, reservations required, Pete’s Mountain Vineyard & Winery, 28101 S.W. Pete’s Mountain Road, West Linn, petesmountainvineyard.com or 503-656-2130.

Sundays with Cho Wines

Dave and Lois Cho are making Willamette Valley wines you need to check out immediately. I recently tasted their wines, and each one was thoughtfully made, well-priced and thoroughly satisfying. Their 2019 Cho Wines Willamette Valley Pinot Noir ($35) is particularly mind-blowing.

During July, you can catch Cho Wines popping up Sunday afternoons at J+J Wine Merchants, next to The Woodsman Tavern. In fact, I recommend visiting J+J Wine Merchants even when the Chos aren’t there.

Noon-4 p.m., July 3, 10, 17 and 24, J+J Wine Merchants, 4525 S.E. Division St., Portland, getchowines.com or info@chowines.com.

‘Oyster White’ from Cooper Mountain Vineyards

The new “Oyster White” ($28) from Cooper Mountain Vineyards shucks off the wintertime blues in a big way.

The crisp, citrus-driven blend of Tocai Friulano, pinot gris, and gewürztraminer was created to celebrate Hama Hama Oyster Company’s centennial anniversary. In addition to bivalves, the wine pairs nicely with picnic fare such as asparagus wrapped with prosciutto and cold fried chicken. Proceeds from “Oyster White” sales will be donated to the Puget Sound Restoration Fund.

coopermountainwine.com or 503-649-0027.

Drink Pink at Bryn Mawr

With food, live music and 22 Willamette Valley wineries pouring rosé, Drink Pink at Bryn Mawr Vineyards will be ground zero for summertime refreshment. The wall-around style tasting event takes place on Bryn Mawr’s sprawling deck, with a view of surrounding vineyards and the Coast Range.

General admission tickets are $75 and are available through Bryn Mawr’s website.

Noon-4 p.m., July 16, Bryn Mawr Vineyards, 5935 Bethel Heights Road N.W., Salem, brynmawrvineyards.com or 503-581-4286.

Alt Wine Fest

Oregon’s wine scene has more to offer than its signature pinot noir. So Mallory Smith and Martin Skegg, co-owners of Sunday School Wine, created a festival to honor Oregon’s grape diversity.

Alt Wine Fest features 37 producers pouring over 100 wines alongside a taco truck, a DJ and any number of lawn games at the picturesque Abbey Road Farm. Be prepared to taste everything from auxerrois to savagnin rose.

Tickets are $68 each through Eventbrite. $145 gets you festival access plus transportation from one of two pick-up locations in Portland.

A portion of ticket sales will be donated to AHIVOY, a non-profit organization providing educational and professional opportunities to the Willamette Valley’s Latino and Hispanic vineyard stewards.

1-5 p.m., July 17, Abbey Road Farm, 10280 N.E. Oak Springs Farm Road, Carlton, altwinefest.com or helllo@sundayschoolwine.com.

Opera on the Lawn at Remy Wines

Remy Drabkin, winemaker and McMinnville’s queer interim mayor, invites you to celebrate her winery’s 16th anniversary with wine, food and opera on her tasting room lawn.

Drabkin will handle the wine while Portland Opera Company’s intrepid performers nail the arias. Even if you think you don’t like opera, you can’t help but have a good time at Remy’s opera on the lawn party. So get those picnic blankets out of the closet and join the fun.

Pricing information and tickets for this event were unavailable as this story went to press. Mark your calendar and keep a close eye on the winery’s event page, as I last year’s event sold out quickly.

1-3 p.m., July 31, Remy Wines, 17495 N.E. McDougall Road, Dayton, remywines.com or 503-864-8777.
