Amazon Prime Day starts July 12; some tips on how to save, score - Times Union

Amazon's exclusive Prime Day shopping extravaganza returns for its seventh year. Now with more access to third-party deals than ever before, the annual Black Friday in summertime sales event launches at 3 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, and runs through Wednesday, July 13.

First held in 2015, the e-commerce giant's self-conceived consumer holiday continues to break records year after year. Total online retail sales during Amazon’s 48-hour Prime Day event in 2021 surpassed $11 billion, according to data compiled by Adobe Analytics, 6.1 percent higher than overall transactions generated in 2020.

Amazon said this year's bumper crop of bargains will feature millions of fleeting deals on electronics, kitchen goods, apparel, appliances, furniture, toys and much more, including impressive savings on Amazon products, like the Fire 7 Kids Tablet for $49, a savings of 50 percent, and the Echo Dot for $19.99, 60 percent off the regular price.

If you're a Prime member easily dazzled by deals, now is the time to prepare for the savings soiree. But that’s just it: You need to be a Prime member in good standing to shop. If you haven't already done so, sign up for a free 30-day trial. A full-year membership is $139. You also can choose to pay monthly at a rate of $14.99 per month. Shoppers with an EBT or Medicaid card can join for $6.99 a month. Students with an ".edu" email can get a free six-month Prime membership trial, or join for $69 annually ($7.49 per month).

Think you’re prepped for Prime Day? Have at it, but heed these dos and don’ts to maximize savings.

DO share your membership perks:

You can share membership perks and split the cost with a family member or friend. Join Amazon Household and share Prime benefits and digital content at no cost. Two adults and up to four teens, each with their own logins, and four children may link in a Household. Just know that they will be able to see your order history and financial information.

DON'T wait to plug in your billing information:

Before the big day, plug in all pertinent account information in advance, including billing and shipping addresses and payment options. Enabling 1-Click Ordering will help you instantly nab vanishing offers, though this feature isn't always available on Lightning Deals — a promotion with a limited number of discount offers.

DO earn some spending money:

Collect stamps, earn $10: Through July 13, when you collect four stamps —  make a Prime eligible purchase, stream a show on Prime Video, listen to a song on Amazon Prime Music and borrow a digital on Prime Reading —  you’ll earn a $10 credit. You’ll need to activate the game to quality for the $10. Visit amazon.com/cer/stampcard/home.

Earn additional spending money: Shoppers can earn Prime Day credits by completing a variety of tasks. For instance, spend $75 on select Procter & Gamble products and you’ll receive $20 to spend on  Prime Day. Purchase a ticket to the movie, “Elvis,” and you can submit for a $5 credit. Earn a $5 credit when you buy a Disney “Lightyear” movie ticket or purchase select movie merchandise. Visit amazon.com/primeday.

DON'T ignore the competition:

Amazon isn't the only retailer hoping to lure you with lavish deals. Several other major merchants will offer competing, simultaneous sales with deals rivaling the e-commerce titan. Target will launch Deal Days on Monday. The company promises big savings during the three-day sale. Last year, Walmart hosted its annual Deals for Days sale, though they hadn’t officially announced plans for 2022 before this went to print. Be sure to also check out Best Buy, which has hosted a Bigger Deal savings event in the past, as well as Kohl’s, Bed, Bath & Beyond and eBay.

DO fill you shopping cart:

Add items to your list and/or cart before they go live, or subscribe to receive deal alert notifications related to your recent searches. If the price should plummet, you'll be notified. Visit the Prime Day event page on the Amazon app to create deal alerts.

DON'T forget about Alexa:

If you do fill your cart, wish list or choose to save an item for later, Alexa will notify you up to 24 hours in advance before your would-be pinned purchase goes live. Say, “Alexa, what are my notifications?” when you see a yellow ring light or notification pop up on your Echo device. You can then ask Alexa to purchase the deal on your behalf or notify you when the sale on that product goes live.

DO shop small businesses for a chance to win big prizes:

Through Monday, for every $1 spent on eligible small business products, you’ll have the chance to win some spectacular prizes, including a pre-game experience and tickets to Super Bowl LVII, VIP passes to music experiences in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, tickets to a special New York City screening and cast meet-and-greet for Prime Video’s upcoming, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” series and more. Visit  amazon.com/primedaysweepstakes.
