Junior midfielder Kate Jamie notched a hat trick with three goals, leading Highlands to a 5-0 victory over visiting Beechwood at Fort Thomas’s Tower Park.
“I thought we came out with good intensity,” said Chris Norris, Highlands head coach. “I thought they came out ready to play. Overall, it was a good team effort. I thought we moved the ball well. I thought we got into the attacking third well. I thought we put some good pressure on their defense to cause some turnovers.”
Laney Smith scored the other two goals for Highlands.
“We’ve been working all summer and this just showed our hard work,” Jamie said. “We’ve been working a lot on team play. That’s something we’ve struggled with being such a new group. We worked as a team and not forcing things down the middle really was our key to success.”
Freshman Natalie Hinegardner made four saves for the Bluebirds.
“We have a great mix of older and younger girls,” Hemsath said. “So we’re building up the defense. I think we’re doing a really good job of coming together and working as a defense. Obviously, Nat has been developing really well as a goalie. We also have a really strong midfield.”
Beechwood head coach Josh Young said Highlands threw several formations at his Tigers.
“I’m proud of our team,” Young said. “We definitely have some things to work on. But hat’s off to Chris Norris and the Highlands team. They played a good game. We’re a young bunch. It may take us some time. But we’ll get there.”
Highlands plays host to Assumption on Saturday at Tower Park. Game time is 12:30 p.m. Beechwood will play in the 9th Region All A Classic.
Dixie Heights 3, Lexington Christian 1
The Colonels knocked off the Lady Eagles in the first game of the Fayette County Spectacular.
Freshmen Hadley Greene and Hailey Hall scored their first varsity goals. Junior forward Karolyn Lighthall had one goal and one assist for three points to lead the Colonels and senior forward Ashtyn Ivey added an assist. Senior goalkeeper made three saves for Dixie Heights.
Dixie Heights takes on host Henry Clay at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
Cooper 10, Western Hills 0
The Lady Jaguars finished off the Lady Wolverines with 10 minutes to go in the game.
Cooper had 44 shots to none for Western Hills. Lady Jaguar goalkeepers Leah Watkins and Ashley Bessong did not have to make any saves.
Cooper Head Coach Scott Hughes credited senior middle back defender Shelby Snyder for her communication on the field in the game. Hughes said Snyder has done it for years.
“I did not have to really shout many instructions because Shelby says what I’m thinking,” Hughes said. “She just has an unbelievable mind for the game. I’ve really kind of put it on her the last week to kind of take that up a notch, communicate with the midfielders and the other defenders and take control out there on the field.”
Junior striker Maleah Alexander led Cooper with two goals and an assist. Senior midfielder Alexa Luckhardt and freshman midfielder Gracie Iles had two goals each with senior striker Cadence Flamm scoring one goal and adding two assists. Junior defender/midfielder Kathrynne Day and senior midfielder/striker Peyton Jones had one goal each with sophomore midfielder Jessy Nichols and freshman midfielder/striker Alexa Shupe tallying one assist each.
Cooper travels to Park Hills on Saturday to take on the defending state champion Notre Dame Pandas. Game time is noon.
Bishop Brossart 3, Ryle 0
The Lady ‘Stangs ventured to Union and recorded a shutout to open the season.
Senior midfielder Jill Planeaux, junior midfielder Abby Lloyd and junior midfielder/forward Emma Sandfoss scored the Bishop Brossart goals. The Lady ‘Stangs defense helped senior goalkeeper Lauren Gooderson earn the shutout.
“We’re pretty solid back there,” said Brooke Shewmaker, Bishop Brossart senior defender. “We have some good seniors and we have junior Avery Schaefer. We can shut down teams. As a team, we communicate really well.”
“We do not have any holes so I’m not worried about putting anyone in there,” said Andy Smith, Bishop Brossart Head Coach. “We have a lot of girls that can play. That helped us.”
Bishop Brossart welcomes the defending state champion Notre Dame Pandas to the Mustang Athletic Complex on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game. Ryle takes on Newport Central Catholic at 7:30 p.m. the same day back in Union.
Holy Cross 4, Villa Madonna 2
Holy Cross outshot Villa Madonna, 20-7. Senior Sydney Quercioli and junior Ivy Hoffman scored two goals each for the Indians with senior Aleah Arlinghaus tallying two assists and sophomore Jordyn Reiselman recording one. Senior goalkeeper Mia Wilson had five saves.
Senior Maddie Timm had one goal and an assist for Villa Madonna. Senior Brooklyn Pickens had the other goal and sophomore Makena Lainhart had 11 saves.
The Indians travel to Holmes on Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m. and Villa Madonna travels to Dayton for a 5 p.m. game.
South Oldham 5, Simon Kenton 0
The Lady Pioneers ventured to the other side of the 8th Region and fell to the defending state runner-up. Simon Kenton goalkeeper Olivia York made nine saves.
Simon Kenton plays host to Walton-Verona on Wednesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Paul Lawrence Dunbar 1, Conner 0
The Lady Cougars dropped their season-opener in the Fayette County Spectacular at Henry Clay. Sophomore goalkeeper Ally Welch made three saves.
Conner returns to Lexington on Thursday against Scott County (0-0-1). Game time is 6:15 p.m. at Frederick Douglass.
Scott 8, Pendleton County 0:
The Lady Eagles ventured south and won a 10th Region game to open the season.
Senior Allison Clemons netted a hat trick to lead Scott. Sophomore Josie Puthoff added two goals for Scott with juniors Kayla Hermann, Kelsey Breeze and freshman Reese Hendrickson scoring one each.
Scott travels to Grant County on Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
Ludlow 4, Bellevue 1:
The Panthers saw senior Morgan Arnold and junior Quinn Dorger score two goals each in the season-opening win. Freshman Gracie Jones had an assist and junior goalkeeper Brooklyn Huff had nine saves.
Ludlow takes on Maysville St. Patrick on Thursday at 6 p.m. at home. Bellevue plays host to Newport Central Catholic on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Boone County 7, Dayton 0:
The Lady Rebels won in the debut of new head coach John Hicks. Seniors Emily Hunley, Morgan Lipps, junior Lauren Franxman and sophomore Maliyah Fayson scored goals for Boone County.
Boone County travels to Bellevue on Thursday for a 6 p.m. game. Dayton plays host to Villa Madonna on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Walton-Verona 3, Henry County 0:
Junior forward Emma Landrum had a goal and assist to lead the Bearcats in the season-opening win on the road in the 8th Region. Senior midfielder Kaylee Neace and junior defender Macy Sawyer had the other goals and sophomore forward Campbell Christy added an assist. Senior goalkeeper Payton Kenny only had to make one save.
Walton-Verona travels to Simon Kenton on Wednesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Calvary Christian 1, Mason County 0:
The Lady Cougars opened the season with a 10th Region home win. They take on Bourbon County on Monday at 6 p.m. in another 10th Region home game.
