EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Minnesota Duluth fifth-year senior captain, defenseman and Olympic gold medalist Ashton Bell registered a hat trick as part of a four-point night in a 5-0 nonconference victory on Sunday at Long Island University.
The fifth-ranked Bulldogs also got goals from fifth-year senior captain and center Gabbie Hughes and sophomore wing Gabby Krause to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Two of Bell’s three goals and three of her four points came on the power play as UMD went 3-for-7 on advantages after going 0-for-5 the night before in a 4-1 victory over the unranked Sharks. The hat trick was Bell’s first as a Bulldog in five seasons while the four-point night was a career high. She totaled five points in her first weekend back playing for the Bulldogs after taking the 2021-22 season off to centralize with Team Canada, winning two world championships and an Olympic gold medal.
The Bulldogs and Sharks were scoreless after the first period despite a 25-3 advantage in shots on goal for UMD. Bell, Hughes (with an assist from Bell) and Krause made it 3-0 heading into the second intermission and Bell added two more goals in the third.
LIU sophomore goaltender Tindra Holm, who made 61 saves on Saturday, finished with 53 saves on Sunday as UMD outshot the Sharks 58-7.

UMD fifth-year senior goaltender Emma Soderberg stopped all six shots she faced before being relieved six-plus minutes into the third period by freshman Hailey MacLeod, who stopped the one shot she saw.
The Bulldogs will remain in the state of New York this week, but leave New York City. They’ll travel 366 miles north to Canton, New York, to play St. Lawrence at 5 p.m. on Thursday and Penn State at 3 p.m. on Friday. Both games are at Appleton Arena on the St. Lawrence campus.
