Correia Tallies Hat Trick to Lift No. 11 Nittany Lions to a 4-2 Victory Over St. Lawrence - Penn State University Athletics - Penn State Athletics

CANTON, N.Y. -- Correia scored three times and potted the eventual game-winner to help No. 11 Penn State to a 4-2 non-conference win over the St. Lawrence Saints in Appleton Arena on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Catching the Saints on a line change, the Nittany Lions opened the scoring at the 8:36 mark of the second as Kiara Zanon fed Courtney Corriea the puck from the right post, where she was waiting on the doorstep to flick it in behind St. Lawrence goaltender Lucy Morgan.

  • St. Lawrence earned the equalizer as a slapshot sent into traffic from the blueline was redirected out front by Julia Gosling past Penn State netminder Josie Bothun at 13:16 of the second period.

  • Forcing a turnover in the neutral zone, Penn State junior Alyssa Machado regained the lead for the Nittany Lions on a breakaway beating Morgan to the top right corner of her cage with a little over a minute left in the middle frame.

  • Correia notched a power-play goal on a redirect in front of the net from freshman defenseman Kendall Butze giving the Nittany Lions the 3-1 advantage just 85 ticks into the third.

  • The Saints cut the deficit to one less than two minutes later on a cross-ice feed to Abby Hustler who ripped it from the right circle where it ricocheted off Bothun's left shoulder and into the net.

  • Correia earned her first career hat trick and capped the scoring with an empty netter from the top of the left dot after a defensive effort by Zanon caused a turnover with 28 seconds left in the final frame.
