Trick 'r Treat Sequel In Development With Director Mike Dougherty - GameRant

After 15 years, fans of the anthology horror film Trick 'r Treat may finally be getting a sequel. Michael Dougherty, director of the original film, has said that he is currently working on a sequel.

Despite a phenomenal response from critics, the original Trick 'r Treat never received a theatrical release. It circulated film festivals in 2007 and was later released straight to DVD by producer Legendary Pictures and distributor Warner Bros. Pictures. In the decade-and-a-half since, it has amassed a significant cult following and has for many become a Halloween viewing tradition.

This year Trick 'r Treat has started to receive some long overdue recognition. Over the weekend it was screened at Beyond Fest, and there director Dougherty (Krampus, Godzilla: King of the Monsters) said that a sequel is in “very active development,” according to Beyond Fest. Dougherty emphasized that the film is not officially greenlit yet, meaning that Legendary Pictures has not confirmed that they will make the movie, but that the studio is currently fully on board and excited about the project. Even if the project is still in the extremely early stages, this is great news for fans of the beloved original film.

However, this is not the first time Dougherty has gotten fans' hopes up. He had first said in 2009 that he was planning a sequel, but four yours went by without another peep. In 2013, a sequel was officially announced, but then a change in Legendary Pictures' management brought the project to a halt. Now, however, things seem a bit more promising, and it makes sense. This could be the perfect time to release a sequel.

This month Legendary is releasing the original Trick 'r Treat on the big screen for the first time ever, which shows that they have a little more faith in the film than they did in 2007. In addition, Dougherty has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to create a successful horror film in the past decade and a half. Since Trick 'r Treat, which was his directorial debut, he has made the successful Krampus and the major blockbuster Godzilla: King of the Monsters, both for Legendary. All of this, combined with the strong box office performance of horror films in recent years, points to the fact that a sequel could do quite well.

Trick 'r Treat 2 is currently in development.
