WHAT TO DO
WITH CANDY WRAPPERS!
PUBLIC CAN DROP OFF HALLOWEEN WRAPPERS
IN TRICK OR TRASH COLLECTION BOXES
RAPID CITY, SD—It is estimated Americans will have purchased and eaten more than 600 million pounds of candy this Halloween season, most retrieved from wrappers that are simply tossed in the trash, ending up in landfills.
The City’s Solid Waste Division is participating in Trick or Trash, a national program designed to reduce the amount of Halloween candy wrappers ending up in landfills. Local officials hope to reduce the amount of wrappers that will end up at the Rapid City landfill.
“During the Halloween season, the trick-or-treaters will come home with buckets full of wrapped candy. Or we may grab a few bags of candy during the season for our own family enjoyment,” City Solid Waste Outreach Coordinator Ria Hannon. “All those little wrappers add up and it’s important if we can collect a good portion of them and prevent them from ending up at our landfill.
“The program is a great way to educate the public, especially our young people, about the importance of recycling in the community. What better way to bring attention to recycling than to have our children pitching in and dropping off their wrappers in the collection boxes.”
Rubicon launched the Trick or Trash program in schools in 2019. More than 3,100 boxes have been ordered this year, up from the 2,000 boxes sent to schools, businesses and community organizations last year. All 50 states are participating this year.
Trick or Trash collection boxes are located in the City Hall lobby, Main Street Square and the Rapid City Landfill.
