Now 7-3-0 for the season with tonight's result, the Mavericks are 4-0-0 in CCHA games.
St. Thomas tallied the game's first goal when Jake Braccini scored at 4:07. Silye then got going by scoring his first goal when he roofed a shot that beat Ethan Roberts high on the gloveside at 6:31. His second came off of a nice touch pass from Brendan Furry on the power play at 11:18 and the Arnprior, Ont., native completed the natural hat trick with another power play marker on a rebound chance at 16:56.
There was no scoring during the second period and the host Mavericks built a two-goal cushion early in the third period when senior winger Lucas Sowder scored his first goal of the year at the 00:56 mark. The Tommies pulled within one at 11:57 on a Luc Laylin tally, but that was a close as it got.
The natural hat trick by Silye is the first by a Maverick since Brad McClure accomplished the feat March 21, 2015 in a win over Michigan Tech in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association championship game. Silye also had a hat trick in last year's Hockey Day Minnesota game played vs. St. Thomas at MSU's Blakeslee Stadium.
Minnesota State goaltenders Alex Tracy and Kennan Rancier combined to make 15 stops in the game. Senior center Brendan Furry had two assists in the game in extending his point-scoring streak to six games. Junior defenseman Jake Livingstone, who assisted on Sowder's game-winning goal, now has a four-game point-scoring streak.
Next action for Minnesota State is a league home series with Northern Michigan Nov. 18-19.
