Over her years in the public eye, Princess Kate has made looking good in photographs seem effortless. But she has a lot of tricks for making sure she’s always ready for the cameras, and one of them is making the rounds for its ingenuity. One TikTok user uploaded a video of Kate shimmying slowly to reposition herself in front of the cameras, calling it the “Princess Shuffle.”

The video shows the princess next to Denmark’s Queen Margrethe and Crown Princess Mary during an official visit to the country in February 2022. Margrethe tries to pull her closer, but the cameras are already flashing. It looks like Kate does an adept heel-toe a few steps over so she won’t ruin any of the photographers’ shots by turning her head and body. Wearing a tweed Catherine Walker coat dress and four inch pumps by Gianvito Rossi, she managed the maneuver without wobbling at all. These little tricks aren’t uncommon for Kate. She also moves slowly in person, and her head rarely darts around the room. In addition to never blocking a photographer’s shot, it gives her a lot of gravitas.
Kate has been in the public eye for nearly two decades, and we’ve seen her confidence in front of the cameras grow alongside her royal role. She has had media training to help her cope with the photographers—reportedly some of the same training that now-Queen Camilla had before her marriage to King Charles—and before her wedding, she took lessons with famed public speaking coach Anthony Gordon Lennox to make sure she was ready to say her vows mellifluously.
Last July, the Daily Mail’s royal style columnist Miranda Holder pointed out another one of Kate’s best camera tricks on her TikTok account. “She has simply been trained to always keep her chin parallel to the ground,” she said. “She doesn’t tilt it down, she doesn’t tilt it up, and that ensures a flattering photograph every single time.”
Her attention to posing for the cameras might have something to do with the fact that Kate is an avid photographer herself. The princess studied art history in college, and took up photography more seriously after she became a mother and started sharing images of her children on their birthdays. In 2019, she became the patron of the Royal Photographic Society, and in 2020, she helped organize a photo exhibition called “Hold Still,” which collected images taken during the coronavirus pandemic from across Britain.
