Mark Clouse has been a leader for more than three decades. His journey began in the military at West Point and as a Captain in the Army before transitioning to the food industry, where he is now Campbell Soup (CPB) CEO.
Yahoo Finance Executive Editor Brian Sozzi walks the halls of Campbell Soup headquarters in Camden, NJ with Clouse to gather learnings from the CEO’s career. Clouse shares three tips he has for new leaders, one of which involves getting yourself in a position where you can experience leadership to practice and build that muscle.
“Take those opportunities,” says Clouse, “maybe the ones that others won’t take.”

BRIAN SOZZI: We always like to ask three tips on just how to be a great leader. So fire away.
MARK CLOUSE: Well, the first thing I would just say is take those opportunities, maybe the ones that others won't take, and get yourself in a position where you can experience leadership. Because the reality is it is a muscle that you can build, just like any other skill. Second thing is be honest with yourself about what you're good at and maybe where you need support. Because one of the most important tasks you're going to have as a leader is the people that you're going to put around you.
I think the final thing, take care of your own mental health, right? Make sure that you're showing up as the best version of yourself. I think sometimes, we all fall into that trap, which is how hard can I grind? Like let's just grind until we drop. And I honestly believe there's a better way to do it.
