DENVER (KDVR) — Fans went wild on Wednesday night after Colorado Avalanche‘s Nathan MacKinnon tallied a hat trick in the second period. In return, Coloradans repaid the Avs with hats, and undergarments, of their own.
It was a close game against the Washington Capitals until the second period when it took MacKinnon only six minutes and 37 seconds to put three goals in the back of the net.
What started as a one-zero lead quickly turned into a blowout game as the Avs beat the Capitals 6-2 at Ball Arena.
Mackinnon scored four goals on Wednesday, putting him as the lead NHL scorer with 82 points with the longest-point home streak in franchise history.
Avs fans wasted no time celebrating. With 10 minutes left in the second period, hats covered the rink.
But hats weren’t the only article of clothing that hit the ice.
Mark Rycroft, a Colorado Avalanche analyst on Altitude Sports, tweeted a picture of red underwear on the Ball Arena ice after Mackinnon’s performance.
“Thongs have hit the ice for the Mac-Trick!! Folks ran out hats I guess?” Rycroft wrote.
Another person covering the Avalanche posted a picture of a bra that was thrown onto the ice after MacKinnon scored his fourth goal.
Other fans showed their love for the Avs through social media comments.
“The Dogg will not be contained,” X user Alex Salmond replied on a tweet from the NHL.
“Bro is not human,” replied another X user.
This was Mackinnon’s second four-goal game of the season and eighth career hat trick. He’s now tied in second place for the most four-goal games in a season since 1988, according to the NHL.
The Avs are back at Ball Arena on Friday playing the Los Angeles Kings. If you’re heading to the game, maybe wear a hat you can part with.
