We've got Elizabeth Pearson who is the career coach and author of career confinement.

Elizabeth.

Great to have you here with us today.

First and foremost, we, we gotta get to these tips for potential college grads, those who are tossing their hat out there in the ring.

What should they remember in this process?

Brad?

I think it's important for them to follow their jealousy.

And what I mean by that is if one of your friends has a great internship or landed a job and you think?

Wow, that would be so great to be able to do that for myself.

How do I get one like that?

I think that it's good to lean into that, right.

Is it something you have a high likelihood of being passionate about maybe some potential for growth, be sure that you're not just looking at jobs as a paycheck or a way to impress your parents or your parents friends.

Absolutely.

You also say, go the extra mile.

What does that look like in practice?

I think it's really easy to just go on linkedin and hit easy apply or just kind of send your resume out into the abyss.

But what I always recommend is going the extra mile by reaching out to the hr manager directly on linkedin.

A lot of times you can go to the company page and find out who their senior recruiter is or head of hr and send them a linkedin note with a request and say, hey, I saw this job and I would love for you to be a direct point of contact that I could send my resume to.

Certainly, I mean linkedin synonymous with network synonymous with the connect button.

So how can people lean into that network as well?

I think that there's linkedin, but then there's all of these other places too.

There's so many little hubs of um you know, people who are like minded are going to be in the same industry on meet ups.

Um There's so many professional networking sites that you can join.

I also say, look around you.

I don't think you should have any shame in asking your parents if they know anybody who's working for a company you want to work for, just to make an introduction, we don't want your parents to get you the job.

But I think it's totally fine for them to make introductions to people who, um, are making decisions on who comes into the company or not.

And not only that, maybe they know people this is the time to really spread out and really try to get as many points of connection as possible.

Now, what about the resume?

You know, there's so many different jobs that people are applying to making sure that they're submitting their resume, the cover letter and we can get the cover letters in a hot second.

But as you're thinking about customizing that for each role and position that you're throwing your hat in the ring for ho how do you go about that diligently?

Yeah.

And Brad, I think this kind of like falls undergoing the extra mile too.

You need to have different versions of your resume and that can sound like a headache because nobody loves working on the resume.

I totally get it.

But this is where you're gonna get the money.

This is where you're gonna curate a resume around a job description so that it really communicates that you are a subject matter expert.

You really want the person reading your resume to think.

Wow.

I mean, I don't know how anybody else could do this job, but this person in a way that you can do that is I say get the answers to the test off linkedin.

A lot of times what they want is specifically listed in the job description on linkedin.

So go in there, find the keywords and make sure that those points are in your resume.

It's really just a game of connecting the dots from what they want to what you can provide.

All right.

And then just lastly while we have you here, I mean, there are so many candidates out there that are researching and looking at companies that actually align with their values.

What should the frame of mind be and, and thinking there.

Yeah, it's really important because if you go into a place where it says, oh, we're really fast paced and all of this stuff that can be code for, you're going to be working 18 hour days, right?

Like make sure that you're ok with that.

A lot of times you can read between the lines on their social media or even on their website page when the the About us section um about what the culture is like.

It's all are really good to go in places like glass store and see the reviews of past employ employees.

And if you know anybody that worked there, you can hit them up on linkedin as well and say, hey, what's your experience working there?

I'm thinking about joining and I want to get a first hand account Elizabeth Pearson, who's the career coach and author of career confinement.

Elizabeth.

Thanks so much for taking the time here with these five key tips.

Appreciate it.

Thanks Brad.
