Aliens Legendary Knife Trick Scene Theory Gets A Definitive Answer After 38 Years - Screen Rant

Summary

  • A new documentary gives insight into Aliens' famous knife trick scene.
  • Aliens Expanded confirms the theory that Bill Paxton didn't know Lance Henriksen was about to perform his wild knife-work in the famed Aliens moment.
  • The new doc also addresses James Remar's firing from the film.

38 years after the classic movie's release, there's finally an answer to a theory about Aliens’ unforgettable knife trick scene. Early in James Cameron’s Alien sequel, the android Bishop (Lance Henriksen) gives a demonstration of his superhuman abilities, pulling off a crazy trick with a knife, with crewmate Hudson (Bill Paxton) as an unwilling victim. Hudson’s shocked reaction in the scene is so convincing that it’s long been rumored that Paxton was actually unaware of what was about to happen, and could only hold on tight as Henriksen performed the finger-risking stunt.

According to the upcoming documentary Aliens Expanded, the theory that Paxton didn’t know the knife trick was about to happen as he shot the second movie of the Alien franchise is indeed true, as filmmaker Ian Nathan recently revealed (via Empire Magazine). Check out his remarks below:

"Writing and directing Aliens Expanded, I was tormented by the fact that this is a classic. What new is there to say? Yet my documentary ended up teeming with fresh insight. The James Remar firing? He was busted for heroin. Bill Paxton not knowing about Bishop's knife trick? All true. Henriksen arrived at Heathrow with a suitcase full of knives. Customs were not impressed. All the Marines had developed their own backstory: Jenette Goldstein's Vasquez was fresh out of juvie. Mark Rolston (Drake) recalled Al Matthews (Apone) bodily preventing the set from toppling onto Sigourney Weaver."

Henriksen Claims He Injured Paxton While Shooting The Aliens Knife Trick

As harrowing as Aliens’ famous knife trick is to watch, it was even more terrifying to shoot, and actually led to Paxton being slightly injured. Speaking to Yahoo.com last year, Henriksen revealed that Paxton didn’t hold still enough during the stunt, and was lightly grazed by Henriksen’s blade:

"I gave Bill a blood blister; he moved his pinkie into the line of fire, and I pinched it," Henriksen admits now. "I didn't even cut a hole in [his finger], and he was acting like I stabbed him with an ice pick! It was pretty funny actually. ... I felt bad about it ... but not really."

Beyond providing a memorable moment, the knife trick scene acts as important character set-up early in Aliens. The scene not only establishes Bishop as a slightly menacing presence – playing into Ripley’s understandable mistrust of androids; though Bishop later subverts expectations through his heroic actions – it also shows that Hudson may not be as tough as his gun-ho behavior suggests.

Aliens Expanded is set for digital release in June 2024

Aliens Expanded promises to give even more details about Henriksen and Paxton’s unforgettable scene, along with all the rest of Aliens’ classic moments. Key figures involved with the 1986 film, including director James Cameron, stars Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Carrie Henn and more, sat down for interviews for the new documentary, which is taking orders now.
