What Makes a Great Kitchen? An Expert Shares His Best Design Tips - Architectural Digest

But you still have choices when it comes to aesthetics, particularly as it relates to your appliances. With Sub-Zero refrigerators, for instance, certain models are panel-ready, allowing you to match their exterior to your cabinets.

Embrace modern materials—and modern appliances.

In his 44 years designing kitchens, Stumer marvels at industry advancements, and he loves to embrace them in the kitchen. On the one hand, there's great improvement in man-made materials, which can reduce the cost of your kitchen project. "Porcelain tiles, I mean, they look real! That's marble, it's not porcelain!" he says. "Any of the man-made products have made a major turnaround in feel, look, and durability."

And on the other hand, there are improvements in appliances that can make your everyday life easier, and those should certainly be considered for your kitchen project. As someone who has used Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove appliances in his work for decades, Stumer is continually impressed with the company's innovations. "Wolf steam ovens are state of the art. I mean, you get a tasty chicken out of the steam oven. It is moist, delicious, juicy. I can't say enough about it," says Stumer. "Everybody can become a chef now." He's also fascinated by the Wolf vacuum seal drawers. "You can put extra food in, and the system takes the air out and shrink-wraps it. I think that's going to attract a lot of my clients with three or four children."

Do whatever is in your power to bring in natural light.

"Where do you start your day? In the kitchen. Whether it's making a cup of coffee, putting on the news, talking to somebody, or reading the newspaper, you want natural light. You want to sit there and be bathed in light to start your day," says Stumer. "So we try to bring as much light as possible into the framework of the kitchen."

Natural light doesn't necessarily have to come from a simple picture window over the kitchen sink or a slot window tucked into the only open real estate. Stumer advises you to dream big. He's a big fan of retractable glass walls to create indoor-outdoor spaces—consider creating a perfect alfresco kitchen with Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove outdoor appliances—but understands that's not always possible given space, budget, and climate. "We're doing a kitchen now where we don't have that ability, but the breakfast room that we're putting out into the backyard is a three-wall glass room with a skylight in the middle," he says. "So it'll read from the outside as a pure glass cube. What a beautiful way to start your day."

With any kitchen, Stumer emphasizes that all design decisions should suit your individual needs. And if the results differ from the standard, it's perfectly acceptable to forge your own path. "Your kitchen fits into your lifestyle," says Stumer.
