Simply put, Nicole Douglas is really good at what she does. The senior forward netted her third career hat trick in Thursday’s 4-2 win over CSUN (1-4-0). No. 21 Arizona State (5-0-0) relied on its primary scorer to provide the offense to win its fifth straight game.
The Sun Devils put the pressure on early without anything to show for it. There were a handful of crosses that never found someone on the other side. The attack went up a notch after CSUN took the early lead in 21st minute.
The goal scoring started on a beautiful feed from Douglas. Her pass in the box gave Jayda Hylton-Pelaia a great opportunity. However, she never got a shot off. The Matador defender fouled Hylton-Pelaia leading to a penalty opportunity for Douglas. She easily cashed in the equalizer.
It wasn’t long before Douglas found the back of the net again. A through ball got Douglas out in front of the pack, she finished the run with an excellent strike to give the Sun Devils their first lead of the game in the 31st minute.
The English product saved her best for last. After freshman Kennedy Mayo cushioned the lead by scoring her first career goal in the first half, Douglas secured the hat trick in the second half. She blasted a shot by CSUN goalkeeper Elizabeth Bornhauser to put the Sun Devils up three.
The backline had a couple of unusual miscues. Former Sun Devil Erin Anderson got a clear path on a header from a corner kick to score the first CSUN goal. A miscommunication between the defenders and Birta Gudlaugs led to the second goal.
It was still a win, but those will need to be cleaned up as the Sun Devils head into their biggest match of the season. Arizona State will take on No. 17 LSU, which is also undefeated on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
