Far Cry 6 beginner’s guide, tips, and tricks - Polygon

The open-world gameplay of Far Cry 6 isn’t much different than its predecessors, but there’s plenty new to explore. There are a handful of systems in the latest game that newcomers and veterans alike should know about.

In this Far Cry 6 beginner’s guide, we’ll give you tips and tricks to become the best guerrilla you can be. This guide will teach you about weapon modifications, why you should use different Supremos and Resolver weapons, how to use your Amigos, and exploration strategies.

How to change your fire rate

While firearms like shotguns and sniper rifles have predictable rates of fire, other guns can switch the number of bullets they fire with each trigger pull. Knowing how to change your rate of fire can drastically alter how some guns handle, letting you modify them to suit your preference.

To change your rate of fire, bring up your weapon wheel. When highlighting certain weapons, like rifles, you’ll see a white button prompt in the center of the screen below the ammo type. Pressing the highlighted button or key will cycle through the different rates of fire available to that weapon. For instance, some rifles have the ability to shoot a single bullet, a burst of three, or convert to fully automatic fire with each trigger pull.

How to get more Supremo and Resolver weapons

Supremo and Resolver weapons can give you the edge in combat. However, unlike other firearms you find scattered across Yara, these two weapon types aren’t as easy to come by.

As part of the game’s progression system, you must rank up to unlock new Supremo and Resolver weapon crafting. When completing missions, you gain experience points that contribute to your character’s rank. With each new tier, you gain the ability to craft a new set of Supremo and Resolver weapons.

Unlike other games that give you new abilities and powers as you level up, Far Cry 6 gives you access to new Supremo and Resolver weapons as a way to increase your power. Crafting new Supremo and Resolver weapons requires you to either visit Juan at your main base, or you can locate one of his arms dealers at any of your liberated bases. These powerful weapons do require large chunks of depleted uranium to craft which you get for completing important missions.

Don’t forget your Amigos and their abilities

Amigos in Far Cry 6 are animal companions that aid you in combat. Each one specializes in unique ways, so as you recruit more, you can use them in different scenarios.

While each Amigo has immediate utility in combat, they can also gain abilities over time. Most of their new talents unlock passively as you use them, while others require your input.

For instance, your first Amigo, Guapo, can gain their first ability after reviving themselves five times, whereas their third ability requires you to command them to take down 50 targets.

Each Amigo has different requirements to unlock new abilities. You can check their progress by going to your main menu > Amigos menu > highlight the companion you want to inspect > and then press the details button. Inside this menu, you can read about each Amigo’s main talent plus the requirements and progress to unlock their three additional abilities.

Follow smoke to steal supply drops

While navigating through Far Cry 6’s island paradise of Yara, you might see smoke on the horizon. If you come across billowing orange and yellow smoke, make your way toward it. You’ll be rewarded.

Where there’s smoke, there’s a supply drop you can steal. These containers of resources drop randomly, but you may also learn about them through notes found in the game or through word of mouth. Either way, supply drops are great ways to pile up on crafting resources with little effort.

If you happen upon a supply drop randomly, there’s a good chance it won’t be guarded. In that case, loot it freely. If you are looking to secure a supply drop you learned about through a note or from another character, there’s a chance you may have to fight for the resources. Some supply drops are located on small bases, while others might be in the process of being dropped somewhere on the island. In the latter case, you’ll have to race to secure the loot before enemy forces take it for themselves.

Talk to those you rescue

Whenever you liberate a base or checkpoint, friendly Libertad forces take over those locations. Not only do those areas become fast travel points and zones where you can drop off vehicles, but you can also find missions there.

When walking around a newly liberated area, pay attention to the friendly forces occupying your surroundings. Often they will call out to you. Hear them out. These characters will tip you off to a supply drop or side mission you can take part in. It’s always worth paying attention because the short missions they offer are a great way to gather up more crafting resources or missions to help you rank up.

Build up your camp

One of the first camps you can build in Far Cry 6 is the base at Montero Farms. Constructing new facilities on a camp like this gives you access to new items, abilities, and access to gameplay elements like fishing.

To begin building your camp, speak to a foreman to bring up the construction desk menu.

Camp Facilities unlock new aspects of the game, and you can upgrade them to further enhance what you can do in Far Cry 6. You can build the following facilities at camps:

  • The Hideout Network instantly unlocks the Wingsuit and lets you purchase Hideout locations to set up fast travel points.
  • A Guerilla Garrison places Recon Laptops at vantage points to help you better scout enemy bases.
  • Creating a Fishing Hut unlocks fishing spots where ... you guessed it: You can go fishing.
  • Setting up La Cantina lets you trade meat to create meals that grant temporary buffs.
  • Bandidos Barracks give you the ability to enlist recruits for Bandido Operations that passively help you gain resources.
  • The Hunter’s Lodge unlocks hunting spots and opens up a shop specifically catered to hunting.

As you build out new facilities, you can speak to the foreman to further enhance these buildings and unlock more upgrades and perks. For instance, upgrades to your Hideout Network will eventually let you spawn new vehicles at these smaller bases or give you the option to recharge your Supremo weapons upon entering.
